Review: THEODORE – The Voyage

Ha, da hat die virtuelle Brieftaube aber mal was ganz Besonderes in die Redaktionsmailbox geworfen.
Kurze Info der Promotionabteilung des Labels: Das ist ne Bombe!
Völlig klar, was dann folgte: das kleinste Licht der Redaktion (ja, klar bin das ich…) wurde aus dem Keller gezerrt, notdürftig in so ein explosionssicheres (hat man mir wirklich so gesagt) Sumo- Outfit gesteckt und mit ‘ner handelsüblichen Wasserpumpenzange los geschickt, sich der Sache anzunehmen.
Was soll ich sagen, alles halb so wild. Also ne Bombe ist das Material tatsächlich, aber natürlich völlig positiv gemeint.
Nun sitze ich also wieder im Keller an meinem schlecht beleuchteten Schreibtisch, vor der großen HiFi- Anlage und höre mir THEODORE – „The Voyage“ an. Wobei, sitzen tue ich nach drücken der Play-Taste nur noch Millisekunden, dann haute es mich sprichwörtlich vom Hocker!
Is´n Konzeptalbum, ham´se gesacht…
Vom Theodore, der war schon Support vom SIGUR RÓS, ham´se gesacht….
Watt se nich gesacht ham´ is, dass dieser Mann ein genialer Multiinstrumentalist ist.
THEODORE alias Theodore Polychronopoulos ist Baujahr 1990, Grieche, hat in seiner Heimat Klavier und traditionelle griechische Volksmusik studiert. Zum Studium von Musikproduktion zog es ihn dann 2011 nach London, wo er dann auch eigene Werke released hat. Ab da gehen die Meinungen auseinander, denn bei Discogs werden dem Künstler 3 Alben zugeschrieben, der Künstler selbst gibt aber bisher nur 2 Alben an. Sei es drum, dieses hier firmiert dann also offiziell als das dritte Soloalbum des Künstlers.
Während seines Studiums arbeitete er unter anderem mit KEN THOMAS zusammen, der wiederum für die vorgenannten SIGUR RÓS, M83 und sogar MOBY produzierte. Er hatte bereits zwei große Headliner-Touren in den USA und fånf solcher Touren in Europa, dazu war er eben auch Support für SIGUR RÓS und DIIV. In Deutschland war er unter anderem 2017 und 2018 auf dem Reeperbahn-Festival und wurde 2017 für die beste Performance dort ausgezeichnet. Das scheint übrigens ein Markenzeichen von THEODORE zu sein: im Studio wird mit sphärischer Musik experimentiert, auf der Bühne jedoch eine eigene Sphäre geschaffen, die ordentlich einheizt. Soviel also zum Künstler, und das Album?!
THEODORE – The Voyage
Es handelt sich um ein Konzeptalbum, welches sich, inspiriert durch „2001: Odyssee im Weltraum“, am Thema Weltraum im Allgemeinen abarbeitet. Es geht also neben der Musik auch um die Texte, zusammen wird es eine Einheit. THEODORE sagt selbst dazu: „Die Idee zu diesem Album hatte ich einige Monate vor der Pandemie. Die dystopische Realität, die wir alle erleben, hat mir klar gemacht, dass dieses Album (und der Prozess) eine optimistische Flucht sein soll.“
Somit möchte ich gar nicht so sehr detailliert darüber referieren, denn es würde dem Album seine Spannung nehmen. Erwähnenswert ist da eher dieser besondere Retro- Future- Sound, der sich spielerisch zwischen düsterem Synth Wave im “Achtziger-Gewand”, Avantgarde Pop und Ambient Post Rock ausbreitet; gut zu erkennen bereits im Opener „Man And His Tools“. Weitere Hörproben sind unten in der Tracklist verlinkt. Bisweilen ganz klassisch und sphärisch komponiert, dann wieder eher nach modern elektronischer Art, mit vielen interessanten Details und einer ganz eigenen Magie, die den Hörer sofort in seinen Bann zieht.
Einziges Manko von „The Voyage“: Es ist einfach zu kurz geraten. Man möchte gern mehr hören, es länger genießen…
Fazit:
Eine Empfehlung für jeden Genießer hochqualitativer Popmusik. Ihr bekommt hier ein in sich geschlossenes Gesamtwerk, welches mitreißt, inhaltlich wie musikalisch. Gönnt euch das gute Stück, ihr werdet nicht enttäuscht sein. Und ihr könnt beweisen, dass die 30-Sekunden-Regel von Spotify und Co nicht das Maß der Dinge ist. Ich lehne mich gar nicht so wahnsinnig weit aus dem Fenster, wenn ich THEODORE eine große Zukunft vorhersage.

This time something really special reached us. The short information about the album of the label reads: “This is the bomb”. Of course, what happened next was clear: A small fish of the team (that’s me) was given the task to review this album with a lot of precautions.
But it wasn’t that big of a deal. Although the material is indeed the bomb, but of course only in the positive sense of the word.
I’m sitting in my basement at my poorly lit desk, in front of my big stereo sound system, listening to THEODORE – “The Voyage”. But, I’m only sitting quietly for split seconds after hitting the “Play”-button, because it is literally knocking my socks off.
It’s a concept album, they said.
It’s Theodore, the support of SIGUR RÓS, they said.
That he’s a talented multi-instrumental musician, they didn’t say.
THEODORE aka Theodore Polychronopoulos was born & raised in Greece in 1990. After being schooled in piano and traditional Greek folk music in his home country, he went to London in 2011 to study Music Composition and to release his own compositions.
Following this, things get a bit more unclear, because on Discogs there are three albums which are credited to the artist, but Theodore himself only mentions two albums. Anyway, this album will be the official third solo-album of him.
During his studies he collaborated with KEN THOMAS, who himself worked as a producer for the aforementioned SIGUR RÓS, M83 and even MOBY. Theodore had two big headliner tours in the US and toured five times through Europe, plus he was support of SIGUR RÓS and DIIV. Touring through Germany, he was performing on Reeperbahn Festival in 2017 (and named “Best Performance”) and 2018.
That seems to be the special trademark of THEODORE: He experiments with spherical music in the studio but creates a unique, engaging atmosphere on stage.
So much about the artist, but what about the album?
THEODORE – The Voyage
It’s a concept album inspired by “2001: A Space Odyssey” and the space theme in general. Music and lyrics form a mesmerizing unit. To quote THEODORE:
“I had the idea to make this album some months before the pandemic. The dystopian reality in which we all live made it clear to me that this album (and the process of making it) should be an optimistic escape of reality”.
I don’t want to reveal too much about the album at this point to leave some excitement and mystery to the listener.
Noteworthy is the special retro-future-sound, which is playfully switching between dark Synth-Wave in 80s style, Avantgarde Pop and Ambient Post.
You can already get a glimpse of all this in the opener “Man And His Tools”.
More audio samples are linked in the track list. Some are very classic and composed in a spherical ambience, others follow a modern electronic path with many fascinating little details along the way which will mesmerize you.
The only bad thing about the album: It is way too short. You will want to hear and enjoy more of it.
Summary
A recommendation for every connoisseur of high-quality pop music. It’s a coherent piece of art, which will take your breath away, lyric-wise and music-wise. Get it, you won’t be dissapointed. And by the way, you can prove that the 30s rule of Spotify & Co is not the measure of all things. I’m pretty sure we will hear a lot of things from THEODORE in future.
