“THE KILLERS – Imploding The Mirage”, eine neue Filmreihe von Quentin Tarantino?
Gott bewahre, nein!
Diese Band aus dem kleinen, kaum bekannten Dörfchen Las Vegas in Kalifornien/ USA ist seit nunmehr 19 Jahren auf ihrem Feldzug, die Welt zu erobern, nicht mehr aufzuhalten.
„Imploding The Mirage“ heißt nun das neueste Werk, die Nummer 6 der Studioalben. Und irgendwie auch das erste Album: das erste Werk, welches nach ihrem Wegzug aus Las Vegas produziert wurde. Entstanden ist es in Los Angeles und Park City unter Mitwirkung der Produzenten Shawn Everett und Jonathan Rado.
Mit ihrer wunderbaren Melange aus Postpunk, Wave, Alternative Rock und Pop mischen sie seit ihrer Gründung 2001 regelmäßig die Charts weltweit auf. Egal, worum es thematisch geht, unter welchen Umständen ein Song entstanden ist und zu welcher Zeit ein Lied released wird, immer sind es in die Zeit passende Hymnen mit Ohrwurmgarantie. Es scheint, als hätte Brandon Flowers die Formel ewigen Erfolges entdeckt und doch liefern sie deutlich mehr, als seichte und oberflächliche Pop-Sternschnüppchen mit einer Halbwertszeit von wenigen Wochen. Dies beweisen nicht zuletzt Klassiker wie „Mr. Brightside“, das noch heute in jeder guten (Szene-) Disco, im Radio und in unzählbaren personalisierten Streams läuft. Zurecht haben THE KILLERS eine steile und konstante Karriere hingelegt.

Nun also ab dem 21. August diesen Jahres ein neues Album namens „Imploding The Mirage“.
Für Leute mit wenig Zeit oder begrenzter Auffassungsgabe hier schon mal ein vorgezogenes Fazit: Es ist ein THE KILLERS-Album, also kaufen! Bitte, gerne.
Für alle anderen haben wir es natürlich noch etwas genauer, wobei wir dieses Werk gar nicht totquatschen wollen, müssen und werden.
Es ist im Grunde wirklich ein „klassisches“ The Killers-Album, das Soundgerüst und die hymnengleiche Songstruktur und die Vocals von Brandon, es ist alles wieder da.
Ein paar Schmankerl haben sich die Jungs dann aber doch noch überlegt. Neu ist beispielsweise der teils überdeutliche Einfluss von Folk und Country. “OMG” , mag da manch einer jetzt denken, aber wie soll man es sagen, es funktioniert! Es fällt auf, bildet aber eine Symbiose mit dem Grundsound der Band und wirkt nicht etwa wie ein störendes Anhängsel. Zudem gibt es einige interessante Featurettes: als Gäste wirken LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM, KD LANG, ADAM GRANDUCIEL und BLAKE MILLS mit.
Wem die Songs in der Vergangenheit zu glatt und gefällig waren, darf auch dieses Release getrost ignorieren. Gefällig und rund sind nämlich auch hier die wesentlichen Merkmale, klanglich und kompositorisch völlig frei von Ecken und Kanten.
Der Trick ist gut, denn THE KILLERS haben durchaus etwas mitzuteilen. Und auch unliebsame Wahrheiten werden bereitwilliger geschluckt, wenn sie zuckersüß verpackt sind. (Ja, dasPhrasen- Sparschwein dürfte nach diesem Artikel prall gefüllt sein, aber so what?).

Als Besonderheit sollte das Artwork nicht unerwähnt bleiben. Sämtliche Veröffentlichungen rund um dieses Album sind mit Bildern des Künstlers THOMAS BLACKSHEAR versehen. Das Albumcover zeigt das Werk „Dance Of The Wind And Storm“, bei „Fire In Bone“ war es „Two Peacocks“ und so weiter.
Es handelt sich um eine Bilderserie des indigenen Ureinwohnerstammes der „Crow“, die der Band nicht einfach nur ihr Einverständnis zur Nutzung der Werke gaben, sondern in einem Brief auch folgendes mitteilten: „Artists living across the world inspired by our people and way of life, is a total honour and true testament of the knowledge our people share. During this unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as well as the injustice of police brutality protests around the world. Our people recognize the need to also help keep our spirits positive.“

Kennen dürftet ihr schon die Single „My Own Soul’s Warning“ (hier Video ansehen), den neuesten Appetizer, seit Juni im Umlauf. „Caution“ und „Fire In Bone“ sind schon länger erhältlich.

Imploding The Mirage im Detail

Ein Synth- Fade In eröffnet „My Own Soul’s Warning“, gefolgt von einem zarten Vocal Brandons, bevor es The KILLERS-typisch orchestralisch- bombastisch losgeht! Die musikalische Message: diesen Zug wird niemand stoppen können! Sofortiger Ohrwurm, Widerstand zwecklos.
„Blowback“ nimmt wieder etwas Fahrt raus und bekommt einen ordentlichen Touch Südstaatensound und 80s-Feeling. Geschmeidige Pop- Hymne, die tatsächlich akustisch irgendwo in der zweiten Hälfte der Achtziger angesiedelt ist und schwere Einflüsse von Tom Petty und Co freilegt. Die Älteren unter uns können schwelgen und den jüngeren sei damit der Beweis erbracht: wir hatten „damals, kurz nach dem Niedergang der Dinosaurier“ auch tolle Musik. Herrlich umgesetzte Retro- Romantik.
„Dying Breed“ hat einen deutlich vielschichtigeren Aufbau. Straight edge? No, never! Einstieg mit funky Gitarren und einer ruhigen Base, ab ca der Hälfte dann bombastisch, um dann mit Kniffen wie die großen Meister von Queen die festen Strukturen breit aufzubrechen.
„Caution“ wiederum beginnt zaghaft aus dem „Off“ und hat dann etwas lockeres, wie ein wunderbarer Sommerhit. Eine verspielte Leichtigkeit, die ihresgleichen sucht.
Das Rezept mit dem zarten Einstieg findet sich auch in der „Backanleitung“ zu „Lightning Fields“ wieder. Und wieder befindet man sich mitten in den Achtzigern wieder, ohne altbacken zu wirken. Der Refrain brennt sich im Kopf fest, wahnsinn!
„Fire In Bone“ spielt mit Zitaten an 80s- Black- Electropop- Hits. Ja ja, immer wieder die 80er… Waren halt ein tolles musikalisches Jahrzehnt und bot vieles, was man auch heute noch gut verwenden kann, ohne Gefahr zu laufen, altbacken oder gar langweilig zu wirken. Man muss es nur richtig anstellen. Und THE KILLERS können das, ganz ohne Frage.
Funky Südstaaten-Pop wird uns auch bei „Running Towards“ präsentiert, und wieder huscht Tom Petty im Paradies ein zufriedenes Lächeln über das Gesicht. Das könnte auch ohne Probleme als neues Werk der TRAVELING WILBURYS durchgehen.
„My God“ ist eine deutliche Ansage, verpackt in eine kraftvolle Ballade. Soundtrack für Zeiten wie die aktuelle.
Ganz ruhig wird es dann bei „When The Dreams Run Dry“. Auch hier thematisch gar nicht so leichte Kost, die aber wieder herrlich balladesk verpackt wurde und wie ein seichtes Liebeslied daher kommt. Da hat Schneider Brandon dem Wolf ein perfekt sitzendes Schafskleidchen genäht.
Zum Abschluss gibt es dann den Namensgeber dieses Albums, „Imploding The Mirage“. Wie soll man es sagen? THE KILLERS in Bestform!

Fazit:

Ganz großes Kino!
Ein Wunderwerk aus gefälligem Pop für die Massen, großen orchestralen Hooks, reichlich Zitaten an Künstler und Werke längst vergangener Zeiten, topmodern und mit einer großen Portion Independent.
Geht doch gar nicht?! Wer das behauptet, hat noch nie THE KILLERS gehört!
Kaum eine Band schafft es so spielend leicht, auf allen Hochzeiten zu tanzen, ohne sich dabei zu verlieren oder selbige zu sprengen.
Auf „Imploding The Mirage“ beweisen sie, dass das „Verwerten“ von schon einmal da gewesenem keinesfalls cheap ist und dass man tatsächlich Independent Musik für die breite Masse machen kann. Jeder einzelne Titel hat das Potential, für hohe Chartpositionen, ohne wie Massenware aus den bekannten „Hitschmieden“ zu klingen.
Fans sollten es sich sofort zulegen, Freunde großer Hits ebenfalls, wer die 80er liebt, kommt hier auch nicht dran vorbei. Noch wen vergessen? Egal, kaufen, hiermit kann man unmöglich etwas verkehrt machen!

THE KILLERS – Imploding The Mirage – a new film series by Quentin Tarantino? Holy god, no! This band originated from the small and nearly unknown village Las Vegas in California, USA has been conquering the world for nineteen years now and can’t be stopped. „Imploding The Mirage“ is the name of their newest production and sixth studio album. In a certain way it could also be called the „first“, because it’s the first one, which has been produced since the band left Las Vegas.
It was made in Los Angeles and Park City assisted by the producers Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado.
Since their founding in 2001 this band keeps entering the worldwide charts again and again with their wonderful mixture of post punk, wave, alternative rock and pop music. And these hits are always time-matching anthems with a catchy charactere, no matter what time they were released, how the cirumstances were or what their topic has been. It seems like Brandon Flowers has detected the secret of persistent success, however, the band is still yielding more than just shallowand facile pop music flashs in the pan, lasting for weeks. Classics like „Mr. Brightside“ are an evidence for that, because this song still gets played in many good scene clubs, in the radio programme and in innumerable personal streaming sessions as well. So THE KILLER’s stellar and enduring career is well deserved!
So we’ll get a new album called „Imploding The Mirage“ at the 21st of august. We’d like to give you a glimpse right now in case, you haven’t much time or are slow of comprehension: It’s an album by THE KILLERS, so just buy it! You’re welcome.

For all those more interested people we have some additional information, but we don’t want to talk it into the ground, so we won’t!
It’s a kind of „classical“ THE KILLERS album, to the base and includes the typical framework, the anthem-like song structure and Brandon’s vocals. But the boys are offering a few tidbits of course. For example the partial superior influence of folk and country music is new. You might think „OMG, why?“ in this moment, but it works, anyway! You will notice this influence, but believe it or not: it’s merging into the basic sound of the band, so it’s not out of place but just symbiotic. Furthermore there are some interesting other features: LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM, KD LANG, ADAM GRANDUCIEL and BLAKE MILLS are doing guest performances on this album.
Who didn’t liked the previous songs because of calling them too smooth and pleasing may just ignore this new production, too! Because pleasing and rounding are the main charakteristics here, too, soundwise or compositional rough edges cannot be found.
This works well, because THE KILLERS absolutely have someting to say! And even unwelcome thruths will glady be swallowed if they’re wrapped in twee words (you’re right, that were too many cheesy metaphors, we’re sorry).
Did we mention the outstanding artwork yet? All releases around this album include paintings by the artist Thomas Blackshear. The album cover itself shows the work „Dance of the wind and storm“ while „Fire In Bone“ is featuring the picture „Thw Peacocks“ and so on. It is a matter of a skein of figures showing people of an indigenous tribe called „Crow“ . These people were’nt just declaring their agreement with the publishing, they also wrote in a letter: „Artists living across the world inspired by our people and way of life, is a total honour and true testament of the knowledge our people share. During this unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as well as the injustice of police brutality protests around the world. Our people recognize the need to also help keep our spirits positive.“

Some of you may know the single „My Own Soul’s Warning“ yet. (You can find the video here: Video ansehen)), because this teaser has been released in june already. „Caution“ and „Fire Born“ are available even longer.

„Imploding The Mirage“ in detail

„My Soul’s Warning“ is opened by a synth fade-in, followed by a tender vocal line by Brandon, but after that the typical THE KILLERS sound gets released, coming along with orchestral and overblown tones. The musical message is: Nobody can stop this mighty train! Very catchy, resistance is futile! „Blowback“ hits the break first but adds a bit of 80s vibe and reminds us of „southern state sounds“. A smooth pop-anthem that sounds like taken from the second half of the 80s and shows some influences of Tom Petty and Co. People grown up in that era can indulge in sweet memories and younger ones may understand now, that we back in these times – shortly after the dinosurs went extinct – had awesome music, too! A wonderful created retro romantic.
„Dying Breed“ has a quite more complex setup. Straight edge? No, never! Funky guitars in the beginning together with a calm basic sound lead us to bombast in the midpart, but finish with breaking up the whole structure at the end in the style of QUEEN.
„Caution“ at the other hand starts – indeed – cautious in the background and is turned in something „casual“ afterwards, like an amazing summer hit. A playful lightness that has no equal.
We can recover this way of starting a song gently again in the following song „Lightning Fields“. Another time travel into the 80s without feeling antiquated. The chorus is burned in our mind – Awesome!

„Fire in Bone“ deals with quotes from the 80s Black/Electro pop-era. Yes, it’s the 80s again. That was an awesome decade of music and offered some patterns which can be used in the present as well without running the risk of seeming frumpy or boring. You have to do it right, but THE KILLERS CAN do, obviously, so what?

Funky southern state pop is served again during „Running Towards“ and makes Tom Petty smile in satisfaction again in heaven. This one could qualify as a new work by TRAVELING WILBURYS easily.
„My God“ is a serious announcement, wrapped in a powerful ballad. A fitting soundtrack for times like these actually.
It’s getting really calm afterwards with „ When The Dreams Run Dry“, but it’s not slight fare. Anyway, again the message is packed in a balladic way and turns out to be a lightweight love song. Brandon, the „tailor“, has sewed a proper fitting sheep’s clothing for his wolf here.
The last song is the title track „Imploding The Mirage“. What else can I say but: THE KILLERS bring their A-game!

Result: Welcome to the big show! A marvel made from favourable pop music for the masses, huge orchestral hooks, many homages to artists and oeuvres of long time gone times, state-of-the-art and with a big serve of independence. No way possible? Who says that has never ever witnessed THE KILLERS before! Hardly any band can handle to have one’s cake and eat it too, but THE KILLERS manage to do that without losing themselves. With „Imploding The Mirage“ they prove that it’s not naff to utilize things that already existed before and that you can indeed create independent music for the masses. Each of these song has the chance to reach high chart positions but without sounding like they were created in the well-known hit-workshops.
Fans should bye that immediateley and everyone else, who likes big hits or loves the 80s. Have I missed anybody? Whatever! Buy it, you can’t do wrong.
