Review: LIV KRISTINE – “River of Diamonds”

“Diamonds are a girl’s best friends” so heißt es. Natürlich ist das Unsinn und wenn es so wäre, wäre das auch sehr traurig. Aber trotzdem sind die funkelnden Steine nicht nur materiell wertvoll, sondern auch einfach schön anzusehen. Das Licht bricht sich in vielen funkelnden Facetten und sie bergen natürlich auch ein ungeahntes poetisches Potenzial. Während RIHANNA sich nur wünschte, wie ein Diamant zu strahlen, setzt LIV KRISTINE noch einen drauf und wünscht sich einen ganzen “River Of Diamonds”, allerdings nicht in materieller, sondern in seelischer Form. Die ehemalige Sängerin von THEATRE OF TRAGEDY und LEAVES’ EYES widmet sich schon seit Längerem ihrer erfolgreichen Solokarriere und präsentiert nun endlich die nächste Facette ihres Schaffens mit einem vollständigen Studioalbum.

Wir steigen ein mit “Our Immortal Day” und erfreuen uns zunächst am sehr schönen keyboarddominierten Intro. Und direkt bekommen wir neben Livs wunderschöner Stimme auch männliche Gast-Vocals präsentiert. Es braucht einige Zeit, bis der Groschen fällt und man den Sänger identifizieren kann: Østen Bergøy, der bei TRISTANIA zum Beispiel auf “World of Glass” zu hören gewesen war, geht hier eine stimmliche Symbiose mit Liv ein. Sein leiser, bedächtiger Beitrag verleiht dem Song eine gewisse Mystik und schafft einen großartigen Kontrast zu Livs kräftigen Vocals. Die Keyboard-Klänge begleiten uns durch den gesamten Song.
“No Makeup” lässt uns direkt an den Gegentrend “No Filter” denken, der sich gegen die übermäßige Bearbeitung von Fotos richtet. Eine Rückkehr zu Natürlichkeit und natürlicher Schönheit wünschen sich mittlerweile viele in dieser Welt, die immer künstlicher und unauthentischer wird. LIV KRISTINE stand schon immer für eine natürliche Authentizität und da ist es nur folgerichtig, dass sie nun in diesem Song auch für eine geistige “Ungeschminktheit” eintritt. Doch zunächst bekommen wir offenbar tiefergestimmte Gitarren zu hören, was einen direkt in einen Gothic-Vibe versetzt. Schließlich handelt es sich u.a. um ein Stilmittel von etlichen Gothic- und Doom-Bands wie z.B. PARADISE LOST. Liv singt hier ein Duett mit sich selbst, einerseits mit einer tiefen, andererseits mit einer hochgesungenen Tonspur. Der Song hat eine großartige Botschaft. Make-up dient vielen Menschen dazu, vermeintliche Makel zu verbergen und der Welt ein ebenmäßiges Gesicht zuwenden zu können und sich nicht angreifbar und verletzlich zu präsentieren, die Maske aufzusetzen und die wahren Gefühle tief im Inneren verbergen zu können. Liv Kristine möchte einen anderen Weg vorschlagen: Die eigene Unvollkommenheit in eine Stärke zu verwandeln und so auch ohne Verstellung natürlich schön und vollkommen zu sein. Ähnlich wie das von CHRISTINA AGUILERA interpretierte “Beautiful” sagt “No Makeup” aus: Du bist perfekt, so wie du bist. Verstecke dich nicht. Es ist das Leben, das uns formt und zu dem macht, was wir sind. Und das Leben hinterlässt Narben und Einflüsse, nicht nur im Gesicht, auch im Charakter. Auch im weiteren Text zeigt sich der Ansatz, sich freizukämpfen und einen anderen Weg einzuschlagen: “Get lost – only to come home”. Das ist kein Widerspruch. Manchmal muss man sich verirren, um Orte zu finden, die man sonst nie gesehen hätte und die einem vielleicht zum ersten Mal das Gefühl geben, geborgen zu sein. “No Makeup” ist auch ein Statement für die unverfälschte, pure Liebe. Dieses Gefühl ist immer echt und rein und bedarf keiner Ergänzung, keiner “Aufbereitung”, keiner Schönheitsoperation. Steht zu euch selbst und zu dem-/derjenigen, den/die ihr liebt! Auch vom Sound her und vom Rhythmus dieses Songs kann man nur sagen: Absolut großartig!

“Maligna” beginnt mit einem chilligen Sound, aber die scheinbare Harmonie trügt. Man sollte sich nicht einlullen lassen, denn der Text hat es in sich! Wenn ein noch junger, ungefestigter Geist zum ersten Mal verliebt ist, kann das eine wunderschöne Erfahrung sein. Vorausgesetzt, das Gegenüber meint es gut mit einem. Oft genug ist das nicht so. “Maligna” erzählt von den Gefahren des Missbrauchs und des Ausgenutztwerdens in dieser frühen Phase. Wenn ein Schmetterling gerade aus seiner Puppe schlüpft, ist er noch sehr verwundbar. Die Flügel müssen erst aushärten, er ist nicht in der Lage, sich direkt in die Lüfte der Freiheit zu erheben. Und wenn ein junger Mensch sich in der Pubertät ebenfalls “verpuppt” hat und geschlüpft ist, bietet die Welt viele Wunder, aber auch die Gefahr, dass man in diesem Stadium direkt in einer toxischen Beziehung gefangen wird, ohne überhaupt zu merken, dass man vergessen hat, abzufliegen. Denn eine solche Beziehung beinhaltet vor allem eins: Manipulation. Wenn man als “frischgeschlüpfter Schmetterling” eingeredet bekommt, dass man gar nicht fliegen sollte und dass es doch viel sicherer ist, auf der Erde in der Obhut von einem Beschützer zu bleiben, dann klingt das manchmal gar nicht so verkehrt. Man kann nur hoffen, dass sich möglichst viele Betroffene aus dem “malicious dream” befreien können. Übrigens spricht LIV KRISTINE hier beide Geschlechter an, der Text enthält die Situation aus beiden Persepektiven: “He/Her is abusing you”.
Als nächstes treffen wir auf etwas nur allzu Vertrautes: “Gravity” war bereits auf der EP “Have Courage Dear Heart” enthalten. Der sehr ätherische Song begeistert heute noch genauso wie vor zwei Jahren. “I touch you in the deep. We’re playing with gravity. Catch me in the flow. Can you hold me forever?” . Es ist erfreulich, dass dieser rundum gelungene Song als eines der Highlights auf der EP es auch auf das Album geschafft hat. Jeder LIV KRISTINE-Song erzählt eine Geschichte. Die Single-Auskopplung “In Your Blue Eyes” ist in erster Linie eine Liebeserklärung. Die Protagonistin fühlt sich glücklich und zu Hause und verliert sich in den blauen Augen ihres Seelenpartners. Aber die Wege zur erfüllenden Liebe sind nicht immer gradlinig. Nach Hause kommen ist am Schönsten, wenn man vorher lange und weit weg war. Manchmal verliert man den Weg zu seinen Füßen im Nebel, manchmal läuft man in die Irre und verausgabt sich in letztlich schmerzhaft enttäuschenden Beziehungen, manchmal vertraut man den falschen Menschen, manchmal geht man Wege, die in einer Sackgasse enden. Dann ist es Zeit, umzukehren und sich zu besinnen, wo man wirklich hingehört. “In Your Blue Eyes” erzählt von der Rückkehr, von der letztendlich richtigen Entscheidung und dem warmen Gefühl, wenn man endlich ausruhen darf. Zu dem Song wurde auch ein Video produziert und wem die besungenen blauen Augen gehören, ist unstrittig. Die tollen Gitarrensoloparts in diesem Song verdienen auch noch eine eigene Erwähnung.

Nun kommen wir zum Titelsong, der gleichzeitig auch die erste Single des Albums war. “River of Diamonds” beginnt mit sanft fließenden Gitarren und dann baut sich die Strophe langsam bis zum Höhepunkt im letzten Wort “Slumber” auf, bevor wir in den sehr eingängigen Refrain hinübergleiten. Auch hier haben wir wieder einen besonderen Gaststar an Bord: Fernando Ribeiro, den Frontsänger von MOONSPELL. Die beiden kongenialen Duettpartner singen große Teile des Songs gemeinsam und so entfaltet sich der Fluss der Diamanten angenehm kühl und erfrischend. “River Of Diamonds” ist einer dieser Songs, die sich in dein Unterbewusstsein schleichen. Tage später ertappst du dich dabei, wie du den Refrain unter der Dusche vor dich hinsummst. Auch hierzu sepndierte Metalville Records ein schönes Video, diesmal mit den Lyrics und wunderschönen, nordischen Naturbildern. Gegen Ende des Songs wird der Titel auch von beiden Interpreten in Fernandos Muttersprache Portugiesisch gesprochen.

Der siebte Song des Albums ist ein Cover von DEEP PURPLE-Gründungsmitglied Jon Lord. “Pictured Within” handelt von den vielen positiven und negativen Erinnerungen, die man im Laufe seines Lebens ansammelt. Das besondere Highlight hier ist das Duett von Liv mit ihrem Ehemann Mikkel Espenæs. Die beiden harmonieren nicht nur im Leben wunderbar, sondern verschmelzen hier auch mit ihren Stimmen zu einem schönen emotionalen Ganzen. Ich denke, ich bin nicht alleine, wenn ich mir mehr Gesang von Mikkel wünsche. Ergänzt wird die Ballade von Streichereinlagen von Cello (in der Mitte) und Geige (am Ende). Ein weiterer “Diamond” von Song. Unaufdringlich, sanft dahingetupft wie Tau auf einer Rosenblüte. Empfehlung: Augen zu und die eigenen Erinnerungen heraufbeschwören.
“Huch”, denkt man unweigerlich, wenn man den Song “Shaolin Me” anspielt. Es ertönen asiatische Gesänge und der Schlag auf einen Gong. Aber der Name verrät es bereits: Wir begeben uns nach China! Shaolin bezeichnet einen Mönchsorden, der sich in einem Kloster im Reich der Mitte vor mehr als 1.500 Jahren gründete. In diesem Kloster wurde damals der Chan-Buddhismus begründet. Der Shaolin-Orden war aber auch für die Ausbildung von begnadeten Kämpfern bekannt, die es verstanden, die religiös angestrebte innere Ausgeglichenheit und Einheit mit sich selbst auch in außergewöhnliche Körperbeherrschung zu übersetzen, was sie zu gefürchteten Kämpfern machte. Wer Liv Kristine kennt weiß, dass sie sich sehr für Themen wie Harmonie, innerer Friede und Ausgeglichenheit interessiert und diese Eigenschaften als starke, innere Kraftquelle zu nutzen weiß. Und aus diesem kraftvollen und friedlichen Inneren wiederum stammt auch ihre wunderbare, energetische Musik. “Shaolin Me” überrascht also zunächst mit seiner Ausrichtung, fügt sich aber dann fugenlos in dieses Album ein. Der Titel wird wie ein Mantra im Song immer wieder wiederholt und hat so ein gewisses, meditatives Potenzial. Im hinteren Teil spricht Liv mit beschwörendem Tonfall eine Passage so eindringlich, dass man unweigerlich in ihren Bann gezogen wird. “Shaolin Me” löst für mich damit XANDRIAs “Queen Of Hearts Reborn” als Song mit dem schönsten Sprachsample ab. Der Song klingt schließlich mit einem Gongschlag aus.

“Love Me High” ist die dritte Single des Albums. Es handelt sich um ein Duett mit Liv Kristines Schwester Carmen Espenæs. Die beiden Schwester beweisen bereits ihre wunderbare Harmonie in der Band MIDNATTSOL. Auch hier handelt es sich wieder um ein Liebeslied in verspielter, verträumter Leichtigkeit. Carmen und Liv teilen sich die Gesangsparts so nahtlos auf, dass es keine Brüche gibt, beide Stimmen verweben sich zu einer Einheit.
“Serenity” ist noch ein Song, der von der EP “Have Courage Dear Heart” stammt und sich nun in den “River of Diamonds” einbetten darf. Er beschreibt die Hürden, die man bisweilen überwinden muss, um zu innerem Frieden und Stärke zu finden. Ängste, Tränen, Unsicherheit und die Fesseln, die einem andere Manchen auferlegen wollen – all das steht der Serenity im Weg, aber es gibt auf diesem Weg keine Abkürzung! Man muss die Dornen durchschreiten und sich blutende Schrammen holen, bevor man dieses Stadium der Stärke und Widerstandskraft erreicht hat. Das Besondere ist, dass diese erlangte Stärke dann keiner großen Gesten bedarf, keiner Aufplusterung, keinem Muskelspiel. Diese Stärke, die man sich auf dem langen Weg verdient hat, kommt von innen und kann einem durch nichts wieder genommen werden. Stärke muss sich keineswegs immer in Gewalt und Kampf äußern. Liv Kristine zeigt eine Alternative auf: Offenheit, Empathie, Mut, Herzlichkeit, Leidenschaft und ein Lächeln können ein effektiver Schutz vor den Wirren des Lebens sein.
Kurz vor Ende des Albums müssen wir noch in ein tiefes Tal hinabsteigen. Denn die gerade beschrieben Stärke ist mühsam erlangt. Der Text und die Musik von “If I Am Dreaming” beschreiben noch einmal eindringlich, durch wieviel Schmerz, Erschöpfung und Verzweiflung man manchmal waten muss und dass es sehr hilft, wenn man auf diesem Weg einen geliebten Menschen an seiner Seite hat. Man ist nicht immer gleichstark im Leben! An manchen Tagen hat man viel Kraft, kann den Schwierigkeiten beherzt die Stirn bieten. An anderen wiederum tut es gut, wenn man sich auf jemanden stützen kann. Diesem Halt in dunklen Stunden und der Macht der Liebe wird mit “If I Am Dreaming” ein Denkmal gesetzt.

Im Idealfall ist der “River Of Diamonds” ein endlos dahinströmender Fluss, aber das Album hat leider ein Ende. Mit dem CINDY LAUPER-Cover “True Colours” entlässt LIV KRISTINE uns vorerst. Ein sehr passender Schlusspunkt. Liv singt hier in einem ganz anderen Stil, ihre sonst sehr ätherische, nachhallende Stimme gewinnt hier an Festigkeit und Substanz und steht Cindy in nichts nach. Inhaltlich geht es darum, was manchmal hinter hohen Mauern allzu lange verborgen bleibt. Denn dieser ganze Prozess, die Panzerhüllen nach und nach fallenzulassen und der Welt mutig sein wahres Gesicht zu zeigen, aus seinem Kokon zu schlüpfen und wahre Gefühle zuzulassen und zu zeigen ist ein Prozess, der manchmal lange dauern kann. Und manch ein Zeitgenosse benötigt bei diesem Prozess unsere Hilfe. Nicht jeder bringt den nötigen Mut auf oder ist widerstandsfähig genug. Wenn wir die wahren “Farben” hinter der Fassade eines Menschen erahnen können, weil er uns einen kurzen Blick auf sein Inneres ermöglicht hat, dann können wir ihm manchmal dabei helfen, sich vorsichtig zu öffnen, damit auch andere Menschen das wunderschöne Innere unseres Freundes/unserer Freundin erblicken können. Manche Menschen sind ein Geschenk für die ganze Welt, aber kaum jemand bemerkt es. Hier können wir helfen, indem wir zeigen, dass es sich lohnt, ganz offen zu erstrahlen.

Fazit

LIV KRISTINE hat uns mit “Rivers Of Diamonds” einen Schatz beschert, dessen Wert nicht in Antwerpen oder Idar-Oberstein gemessen werden kann, sondern dessen Strahlkraft jeder Hörer nur für sich selbst einschätzen kann. Jeder einzelne Song wurde zurechtgeschliffen, bis er seine wahre Schönheit enthüllte. Nicht in einem künstlichen Prozess, der die Edelsteine zurechtstutzte, sondern behutsam unterstützend, bis das innere Feuer, das in jedem der Songs schlummerte, das Sonnen- und Mondlicht reflektieren und ungehemmt funkeln konnte. In unserer Zeit ist es eine Seltenheit, ehrliche, authentische, nicht totproduzierte Musik in Händen zu halten. Livs langjähriger Weggefährte Tommy Olsen hat auch hier wieder Meisterhaftes in der Zusammenarbeit mit der Sängerin geleistet. Von Diamanten weiß man, dass sie nur unter sehr hohem Druck entstehen können. Auch Liv Kristine ist durch manche Dornenhecke in ihrem Leben geschritten und wurde unter diesem Druck zu dem wertvollen Menschen gepresst, der sie heute ist. Während andere bei diesem Prozess verbittern, abstumpfen oder sich ganz in sich zurückziehen, bringt sie uns eine Message der Liebe, der Verbundenheit mit der Welt und den Menschen und legt eine Offenherzigkeit an den Tag, die manchmal wehtut. Ihre emotionalen Lieder treffen immer ins Herz und versöhnen die Stärke mit der Verletzlichkeit. Auch die zielsichere Auswahl ihrer Gesangspartner trägt dazu bei, dass dieses Album die höchste Punktzahl bekommt. Egal ob Østen, Fernando, Carmen oder Mikkel – es gibt keine Duelle auf diesem Album, nur symbiotische Duette. Auch die Instrumente sind immer unterstützend, nie dominierend. Die herrlich tiefen Gitarren, das Keyboard, das akzentuierte Schlagzeug und die Streicherbeimischung – hier kommt alles Gute zusammen und schafft ein eindrucksvolles Opus Magnum, mit dem endgültig klar sein sollte: LIV KRISTINE ist besser als jemals zuvor!

” Diamonds are a girl’s best friends,” they say. Of course, that’s nonsense, and even if it were true, it would be very sad. However, these sparkling stones are not only materially valuable, but also simply beautiful to behold. Light refracts in many sparkling facets, and they naturally also harbor an unexpected poetic potential. While RIHANNA only wished to shine like a diamond, LIV KRISTINE takes it a step further and wishes for a whole “River Of Diamonds,” but not in a material form, but rather in a spiritual form. The former singer of THEATRE OF TRAGEDY and LEAVES’ EYES has been dedicating herself to her successful solo career for some time now and finally presents the next facet of her work with a complete studio album.

We start with “Our Immortal Day” and first enjoy the very beautiful keyboard-dominated intro. And directly, in addition to Liv’s beautiful voice, we are presented with male guest vocals. It takes some time for the penny to drop and for one to identify the singer: Østen Bergøy, who had been heard on “World of Glass” by TRISTANIA, for example, here enters into a vocal symbiosis with Liv. His soft, deliberate contribution gives the song a certain mystique and creates a great contrast to Liv’s powerful vocals. The keyboard sounds accompany us throughout the entire song.
“No Makeup” immediately makes us think of the counter-trend “No Filter,” which is aimed at the excessive editing of photos. Many people in this world, which is becoming increasingly artificial and inauthentic, now wish for a return to naturalness and natural beauty. LIV KRISTINE has always stood for a natural authenticity, so it is only logical that she now advocates for mental “unvarnishedness” in this song. But first, apparently lower-pitched guitars can be heard, which immediately puts one in a gothic vibe. After all, it is a stylistic device of several gothic and doom bands such as PARADISE LOST. Liv sings a duet with herself here, with one track sung in a low voice and another sung in a high voice. The song has a great message. Makeup serves many people to hide supposed flaws and to be able to present the world with an even face, not to appear vulnerable and exposed, to put on a mask and to hide true feelings deep inside. Liv Kristine wants to suggest a different approach: to transform one’s own imperfection into a strength and thus to be naturally beautiful and complete without pretense. Similar to “Beautiful” interpreted by CHRISTINA AGUILERA, “No Makeup” says: You are perfect just the way you are. Don’t hide. It is life that shapes us and makes us who we are. And life leaves scars and influences, not only on our face but also on our character. The approach to fighting back and taking a different path is also evident in the rest of the lyrics: “Get lost – only to come home.” This is not a contradiction. Sometimes, one has to get lost to find places one would never have seen otherwise and which may give one the feeling of being safe for the first time. “No Makeup” is also a statement for pure, unadulterated love. This feeling is always genuine and pure and does not require any supplementation, processing, or cosmetic surgery. Stand by yourself and the person you love! Even in terms of sound and rhythm, this song can only be described as absolutely amazing!
“Maligna” starts with a chill sound, but the apparent harmony is deceiving. One should not be lulled, as the lyrics are dark and meaningful! When a young and unformed mind falls in love for the first time, it can be a beautiful experience, provided the other person has good intentions. Often enough, that is not the case. “Maligna” tells of the dangers of abuse and being taken advantage of in this early phase. When a butterfly emerges from its cocoon, it is still very vulnerable. Its wings must harden first; it is not capable of soaring freely into the sky. Similarly, when a young person goes through puberty and “emerges,” the world offers many wonders, but also the danger of becoming trapped in a toxic relationship at this stage without even realizing that they have forgotten to take flight. Such a relationship primarily involves manipulation. If, as a “freshly hatched butterfly,” you are convinced that you shouldn’t fly and that it is much safer to stay on the ground under the protection of a caretaker, sometimes it doesn’t sound too wrong. One can only hope that as many affected people as possible can free themselves from the “malicious dream.” By the way, LIV KRISTINE addresses both genders in this song; the lyrics contain the situation from both perspectives: “He/Her is abusing you.”

Next, we come across something all too familiar: “Gravity” was already included on the EP “Have Courage Dear Heart.” The very ethereal song still inspires today, just as it did two years ago. “I touch you in the deep. We’re playing with gravity. Catch me in the flow. Can you hold me forever?” It is gratifying that this well-rounded song made it onto the album as one of the highlights. Every LIV KRISTINE song tells a story. The single “In Your Blue Eyes” is primarily a declaration of love. The protagonist feels happy and at home, losing herself in the blue eyes of her soulmate. But the paths to fulfilling love are not always straightforward. Coming home is most beautiful after being away for a long time and far away. Sometimes, you lose your way in the fog, sometimes you get lost and exhaust yourself in ultimately painful and disappointing relationships, sometimes you trust the wrong people, sometimes you take paths that lead to a dead end. Then it is time to turn around and reflect on where you truly belong. “In Your Blue Eyes” tells of the return, the ultimately correct decision, and the warm feeling when you can finally rest. A video was also produced for the song, and it is undisputed whose blue eyes are being sung about. The great guitar solo parts in this song deserve their own mention.

Now we come to the title track, which was also the first single of the album. “River of Diamonds” starts with gently flowing guitars and then the verse slowly builds up to the climax in the last word “Slumber”, before we slide over to the very catchy chorus. Again, we have a special guest star on board: Fernando Ribeiro, the lead singer of MOONSPELL. The two congenial duet partners sing large parts of the song together, and thus the flow of diamonds unfolds pleasantly cool and refreshing. “River Of Diamonds” is one of those songs that sneak into your subconscious. Days later, you catch yourself humming the chorus in the shower. Metalville Records also provided a beautiful video for this, this time with the lyrics and beautiful Nordic nature images. Towards the end of the song, the title is also spoken in Fernando’s native language Portuguese by both interpreters.

The seventh song of the album is a cover by DEEP PURPLE founding member Jon Lord. “Pictured Within” is about the many positive and negative memories that one accumulates throughout their life. The special highlight here is the duet between Liv and her husband Mikkel Espenæs. The two not only harmonize wonderfully in life but also blend their voices here into a beautiful emotional whole. I don’t think I’m alone in wanting to hear more singing from Mikkel. The ballad is complemented by string interludes of cello (in the middle) and violin (at the end). Another “diamond” of a song. Unobtrusive, gently dabbed like dew on a rose petal. Recommendation: Close your eyes and conjure up your own memories.
“Whoa,” you think involuntarily when you play the song “Shaolin Me.” Asian singing and the sound of a gong are heard. But the name already reveals it: We’re going to China! Shaolin refers to a monk order that was founded in a monastery in the Middle Kingdom more than 1,500 years ago. At that time, Chan Buddhism was founded in this monastery. The Shaolin Order was also known for training gifted fighters who were able to translate the religiously sought-after inner balance and unity with oneself into extraordinary physical control, which made them feared fighters. Anyone who knows Liv Kristine knows that she is very interested in topics such as harmony, inner peace, and balance and knows how to use these qualities as a strong inner source of energy. And from this powerful and peaceful inner self comes her wonderful, energetic music. “Shaolin Me” is initially surprising in its direction, but then seamlessly fits into this album. The title is repeated like a mantra in the song and has a certain meditative potential. In the back half, Liv speaks a passage with an invoking tone so compellingly that you will inevitably be drawn into her spell. “Shaolin Me” thus replaces XANDRIA’s “Queen Of Hearts Reborn” as the song with the most beautiful language sample for me. The song ends with the sound of a gong.

“Love Me High” is the third single from the album. It is a duet with Liv Kristine’s sister, Carmen Espenæs. The two sisters have already demonstrated their wonderful harmony in the band MIDNATTSOL. Here again, it is a playful and dreamy love song. Carmen and Liv seamlessly share the singing parts, so there are no breaks and both voices intertwine to form a unity.
“Serenity” is another song that comes from the EP “Have Courage Dear Heart” and now gets to be included in “River of Diamonds.” It describes the obstacles one must overcome at times to find inner peace and strength. Fears, tears, uncertainty, and the constraints that others may impose – all of these things stand in the way of serenity, but there is no shortcut on this path! One must walk through the thorns and get bloody scratches before reaching this stage of strength and resilience. Just before the end of the album, we must descend into a deep valley. Because the strength just described is hard-won. The lyrics and music of “If I Am Dreaming” once again vividly describe how much pain, exhaustion, and despair one sometimes has to wade through and how much it helps to have a loved one by your side on this journey. You are not always equally strong in life! On some days, you have a lot of strength and can bravely face the difficulties. On others, it is good to be able to rely on someone. With “If I Am Dreaming,” a monument is erected to this support in dark hours and the power of love.

Ideally, the “River of Diamonds” is an endlessly flowing river, but unfortunately, the album has an end. With the CINDY LAUPER cover “True Colors,” LIV KRISTINE releases us for now. A very fitting ending point. Liv sings here in a completely different style, her otherwise very ethereal and reverberating voice gains strength and substance here and is in no way inferior to Cindy’s. In terms of content, it is about what sometimes remains hidden behind high walls for too long. Because this entire process of gradually shedding armor shells and courageously showing one’s true face to the world, breaking out of one’s cocoon and allowing and showing true feelings is a process that can sometimes take a long time. And some contemporaries need our help with this process. Not everyone has the necessary courage or resilience. If we can sense the true “colors” behind a person’s facade because they have allowed us a brief glimpse into their inner being, then we can sometimes help them to open up cautiously so that other people can also see the beautiful inner self of our friend. Not through an artificial process that trimmed the gemstones, but gently supportive until the inner fire that slept in each of the songs could reflect the sun and moonlight and sparkle uninhibitedly. In our time, it is rare to hold honest, authentic, non-overproduced music in your hands. Liv’s long-time companion Tommy Olsen has once again done masterful work in collaboration with the singer. With diamonds, it is known that they can only be created under very high pressure. Liv Kristine has also walked through some thorny hedges in her life and was pressed under this pressure to become the valuable person she is today. While others embitter, become dull or withdraw completely into themselves during this process, she brings us a message of love, connection with the world and people, and displays an openness that sometimes hurts. Y la vida deja cicatrices e influencias, no solo en el rostro sino también en el carácter. El enfoque de liberarse y tomar otro camino también se refleja en el resto de la letra: “Get lost – only to come home”. Esto no es una contradicción.
A veces es necesario perderse para encontrar lugares que de otra manera nunca habríamos visto y que tal vez nos hagan sentir protegidos por primera vez. “No Makeup” también es una declaración de amor puro y sin adulterar. Este sentimiento es siempre auténtico y puro y no requiere adiciones, “retoques” ni cirugías estéticas. ¡Acepta quién eres y a quien amas! También en cuanto al sonido y ritmo de esta canción, solo se puede decir: ¡Absolutamente genial!

“Maligna” comienza con un sonido relajado, pero la aparente armonía es engañosa. No deberíamos dejarnos engañar porque ¡el texto tiene mucho que decir! Cuando una mente joven e inestable se enamora por primera vez, puede ser una experiencia maravillosa, siempre y cuando la otra persona tenga buenas intenciones. Muy a menudo, esto no es así. “Maligna” habla de los peligros del abuso y el ser explotado en esta etapa temprana. Cuando una mariposa acaba de salir de su crisálida, todavía es muy vulnerable. Pero los caminos hacia el amor satisfactorio no siempre son rectos. Regresar a casa es lo más hermoso cuando se ha estado lejos durante mucho tiempo. A veces se pierde el camino bajo la niebla, a veces uno se extravía y se agota en relaciones dolorosamente decepcionantes, a veces se confía en las personas equivocadas, a veces se toma caminos que conducen a callejones sin salida. Los dos duetistas geniales cantan gran parte de la canción juntos, por lo que el río de diamantes se despliega agradablemente fresco y refrescante. “River of Diamonds” es una de esas canciones que se cuelan en tu subconsciente. Días después, te atrapas a ti mismo tarareando el estribillo bajo la ducha. También para esto, Metalville Records ofreció un hermoso video, esta vez con la letra y hermosas imágenes de la naturaleza nórdica. Al final de la canción, el título también es hablado por ambos intérpretes en portugués, el idioma materno de Fernando.

La séptima canción del álbum es una versión de Jon Lord, miembro fundador de DEEP PURPLE. “Pictured Within” habla de los recuerdos positivos y negativos que uno acumula a lo largo de su vida. El especial punto culminante aquí es el dúo entre Liv y su esposo Mikkel Espenæs. Los dos no solo armonizan maravillosamente en la vida, sino que también unen sus voces aquí en un hermoso todo emocional. No creo ser el único que quiere escuchar más cantar a Mikkel. “Whoa”, piensas involuntariamente cuando escuchas la canción “Shaolin Me”. Se escucha canto asiático y el sonido de un gong. Pero el nombre ya lo revela: ¡Vamos a China! Shaolin se refiere a una orden de monjes que fue fundada en un monasterio en el Reino Medio hace más de 1.500 años. En ese momento, el budismo Chan se fundó en este monasterio. La Orden Shaolin también era conocida por entrenar a luchadores talentosos que eran capaces de traducir el deseado equilibrio interior y la unidad consigo mismos en un control físico extraordinario, lo que los convertía en luchadores temidos. Liv Kristine muestra una alternativa: la apertura, la empatía, el coraje, la calidez, la pasión y una sonrisa pueden ser una protección efectiva contra las turbulencias de la vida.
Al final del álbum, tenemos que bajar a un valle profundo. Porque la fuerza descrita anteriormente se obtiene con mucho esfuerzo. El texto y la música de “If I Am Dreaming” describen una vez más de manera conmovedora cuánto dolor, agotamiento y desesperación a veces se deben soportar, y que es de gran ayuda tener a alguien amado a su lado en este camino. ¡Uno no siempre es igual de fuerte en la vida! En algunos días, se tiene mucha fuerza y se puede enfrentar valientemente las dificultades. En otros días, es bueno tener a alguien en quien apoyarse. Con “If I Am Dreaming”, se rinde homenaje a este apoyo en horas oscuras y al poder del amor.
Idealmente, “River Of Diamonds” es un río que fluye interminablemente, pero lamentablemente el álbum tiene un final. Liv Kristine nos despide por el momento con la versión de CINDY LAUPER “True Colours”. Un cierre muy apropiado. Aquí, Liv canta en un estilo muy diferente, su voz etérea y resonante normalmente gana firmeza y sustancia, y no se queda atrás de Cindy. Algunas personas son un regalo para todo el mundo, pero apenas alguien lo nota. Aquí es donde podemos ayudar al mostrar que vale la pena brillar abiertamente.

LIV KRISTINE nos ha brindado un tesoro con “Rivers Of Diamonds”, cuyo valor no puede ser medido en Amberes o Idar-Oberstein, sino que cada oyente puede evaluar su brillo por sí mismo. Cada canción ha sido pulida hasta revelar su verdadera belleza. No en un proceso artificial que recorta las gemas, sino con cuidado y apoyo hasta que el fuego interno que dormía en cada una de las canciones pudiera reflejar la luz del sol y de la luna y brillar sin restricciones. En nuestra época, es raro tener música honesta, auténtica y no producida en nuestras manos.
