„Acts Of Worship“, was für ein Titel!

„Acts Of Worship“ heißt das tatsächlich erst zweite Album der Postpunk-/ Wave Combo ACTORS aus Vancouver. Das Debüt „It Will Come To You“ schlug 2018 ein wie eine Bombe und hat bis heute so einen gewaltigen Nachhall, das man versucht ist zu glauben, diese Band gebe es schon seit Jahrzehnten. Unterstützt wird dieser Eindruck natürlich auch durch die latent vorhandenen musikalischen Zitate an die großartigen 80er. Und doch ist da so viel mehr, als eine weitere Band, die den aktuellen Retro Hype befeuert. Die 4 Kanadier*innen haben ein Gespür für hymnische Hooks, gefällige wie tanzbare Beats und eine kultige Attitüde. Nun also steht mit „Acts of Worship“ der Nachfolger in den Startlöchern. Und überraschenderweise blühen uns keine (negativen) Überraschungen. Die Band macht genau dort weiter, wo das letzte Album aufgehört hat. Überzeugen konntet ihr euch davon durch die bereits erschienen Singles „Strangers“, „Love U More“, „Like Suicide“, „Only Lonely“ und ganz aktuell „Cold Eyes“. Am ersten Oktober steht nun das Gesamtwerk zum Erwerb bereit.
Das bewerte Rezept mit treibenden Beats, großen Hooks und einer großen Portion Drama zeigt auch hier seine Wirkung. Produziert wurde das Werk von JASON CORBETT im eigenen Jacknife Studio in dem auch Szene Mitstreiter wie zum Beispiel die BOOTBLACKS ihren Sound gestalten können.
Schubladen für Bands wie diese zu finden ist gar nicht mal so einfach, denn stilistisch bedienen sie sich ganz selbstverständlich in unterschiedlichen Styles. So treffen auf die Tracks von ACTORS die Bezeichnungen Post-Punk, Darkwave, Wave, Synthpop, Alternative Rock und Retro Synth in unterschiedlichen Gewichtsanteilen zu.
Haben wir bisher gemeint, großartige Melodieführungen seien nur den Schweden in die Wiege gelegt, belehrt uns die Vancouver‘ Szene gerade knallhart eines Besseren. Man hat bei den Hooks zwar ständig das Gefühl, Benny und Björn von ABBA hätten ihre Finger mit im Spiel, vermeiden sie es doch alle gekonnt, im Kitsch zu versinken. Nach wie vor ist es erstklassige Szenemusik, was man fast bedauern mag, denn diesen Sounds ist eigentlich die Weltherrschaft zuzutrauen.

„Acts Of Worship“ kredenzt uns 10 neue Hymnen in einem wunderschön mystischen Paket.

Der Longplayer startet mit „Love U More“ und „Strangers“, die die Marschrichtung klar vorgeben: leicht verwaschene Drums, bittersüße Synthsalven, chorale Refrains mit teils schön gehauchten Einsätzen von SHANNON HEMMETT…
„Cold Eyes“ ist etwas treibender und wie geschaffen für die Dancefloors der Szene, wenngleich das abrupte Ende so manchen DJ ins Schwitzen bringen dürfte.
In „Obsession“ wiederum zieht uns der hypnotische Basslauf in Kombination mit den einzigartigen Vocals in seinen Bann. Das Lied ist so lieblich wie tragisch.
„Death From Above“ stellt alles vorher Geschriebene irgendwie in Frage. Man ist schon bei den ersten Synthieklängen versucht, nach seinem Walkman zu greifen um Batterien und Kassette zu überprüfen, denn es leiert durchgängig. Man braucht tatsächlich ein Paar Anläufe, um sich daran zu gewöhnen. Zusammen mit den etwas fordernderen Vocals zeigt sich hier die punkige Seite, was sich bei „Killing Time (Is Over) fortsetzt, ohne das wavige Terrain vollends zu verlassen.
„Only Lonely“ ist da schon wieder deutlich anschmiegsamer, was sicher auch an Shannons vocalen Einsätzen liegt. „Strangers“ ist uns schon so sehr vertraut, dass man meinen könnte, es wäre bereits auf „It Will Come To You“ enthalten gewesen. Auch hier kann man die Tanzbeine kaum stillhalten, wobei sich diese Plattitüde eigentlich auf alle ACTORS Songs anwenden ließe. „End Of The World“ ist so ergreifend, dass man sofort aus dem Fenster schauen möchte, um nichts davon zu verpassen.
Abschließend entlässt uns „Once More With Feeling“ etwas bedrückt zurück, sodass man dem nächsten Album schon wieder entgegenfiebert, um zurück ins Licht geholt zu werden. Das funktioniert quasi wie bei Blockbustern im Kino, wo das lose Ende direkt schon eine Fortsetzung ankündigt. Und somit gibt es doch eine Überraschung auf dem Album, denn so zurück gelassen zu werden hat niemand erwartet.

Fazit:

Ganz ganz großes Kino. ACTORS liefern mit „Acts Of Worship“ definitiv ab, ohne Wenn und Aber. Dieser Sound, diese Stimmen, diese Simmung und dazu noch feine Lyrics, mehr kann man gar nicht erwarten. Dieses Album ist pure Magie, man möchte es wieder und wieder hören. Für meinen Geschmack hätte der ein oder andere Song noch etwas länger sein können, aber dies ist eine tatsächlich absolut subjektive Meinung, die daher auch nicht in die Benotung einfließen wird. Wenn ich jetzt schreibe, das Album „ist rund“, werden sicherlich manche Abwinken und behaupten, im „Untergrund“ müsse alles „Ecken und Kanten“ haben, alles „roh und ungeschliffen“ sein. Ich widerspreche und sage, es kann sehr wohl rund sein, ohne in seichten Pop abzudriften. Gönnt euch dieses Album und lasst euch davon überzeugen.
Jetzt muss es die Weltlage nur noch zulassen, dass wir diese kanadische Magie live erleben können. Sollte sich da etwas ergeben, erfahrt ihr es natürlich direkt hier auf diesem Kanal!

„Acts Of Worship“ – what a catchy title!

„Acts Of Worship“ is only the second album of the Vancouver based postpunk / wave combo ACTORS. Its debut “It Will Come To You” blew everybody off their shoes in 2018 and until today has such a massive echo, leading everybody to believe this band exists for decades already. This perception is literally supported by the latently used 80ies musical quotes. But there is much more to it than just another retro hype fueling band. The four Canadians have a distinct grasp for hymnic hooks, accommodating and danceable beats and a real iconic attitude. “Actos Of Worship” now poses as the successor and astonishingly, no (negative) surprises come along. ACTORS just continues where the previous album stopped.
The previously released singles “Strangers“, “Love U More“, “Like Suicide“, “Only Lonely” and recently “Cold Eyes” were adequate proof. From October, 1st onward the new complete album is ready for your purchase! The well-tried recipe with driving beats, big hooks and a huge portion drama unfolds its effect just here. JASON CORBETT in his Jacknife Studio is the producing mastermind of this incredible piece of art, where scene fellows such as the BOOTBLACKS design their sounds as well. To find drawers for bands like the ACTORS is not a trivial feat, since they tap very naturally into different styles. Their tracks can be labeled Post-Punk, Darkwave, Wave, Synthpop, Alternative Rock or Retry Synth in varying weights. Did we previously believe only Swedes are gifted with melodic blood, the Vancouver scene toughly teaches us an entirely different story. Regarding the hooks a constant feeling of Benny and Björn of ABBA having their go at it exists, but the turning into kitsch is skillfully prevented. After all it is excellent grade A genre music, nearly regrettable, since these sounds could claim world supremacy.

“Acts Of Worship” serves us ten new hymns in a wonderful mystic package.

The long player starts with “Love U More” and “Strangers” which clearly determine the marching course: slightly blurred drums, bitter-sweet volleys of synths, choral refrains with partial beautifully whispered cues of SHANNON HEMMETT… “Cold Eyes” is more driving and created just for the dancefloors of the genre, although the abrupt ending will drive despair into the eyes of some DJs. In “Obsession” the hypnotic bass in combination with the unique vocals enthralls the listener. The sound is as lovely as it is tragic. “Death From Above” puts all previously praised in question. Just right from the beginning of the first synth sounds the temptation to grab the Walkman and double-check its batteries or the tape rises, a constant grinding is audible. A few attempts are necessary to get used to it. Jointly with the demanding vocals a punky side shows itself, to be continued with “Killing Time (Is Over)” but without entirely leaving the wave terrain. “Only Lonely” is considerably more cuddly, surely thanks to Shannon’s vocal cues. “Strangers” is that familiar already that it leads to believing it was published back on “It Will Come To You”. Again, the dancing feet can’t be stopped – whereby this banality applies to all of the ACTORS songs. “End Of The World” is so moving that an immediate urge to look out of the window arises, just to not miss any portion of it. Concluding, “Once More With Feeling” dismisses with a certain feeling of depression, leaving desperate and excited looks forward towards the next album – to be pulled back into the light. It is similarly working as with cinematic blockbusters, where the lose ending conjures the sequel. And there is the surprise of this album as nobody expected to be left behind like that.

Bottom Line:

Cinema at its most. Very. ACTORS’ “Acts Of Worship” definitely delivers, with no ifs and buts. This sound, these vocals, that atmosphere and very delicate lyrics, nothing else to expect. This album is pure magic with the need to listen to it over and over again. For my liking one or the other song could have been longer, but this is a purely subjective opinion that will not be considered for the rating. If I now write that the album is well rounded, some will decline and claim that underground work needs to have rough edges, that it needs to be raw and unpolished. I refute and exclaim that indeed it can be round without drifting into a shallow pop genre. Treat yourselves with this piece of art and get convinced by it!
What remains is a change to the global situation to allow this Canadian magic to happen live in front of us. If something is up, you will get the news directly on this very channel!
