Sie sind wieder da! Wer? Na FORM, das 80’s lastige Projekt um ROB DUST, MARK R. BEBB und KEITH TRIGWELL, durch das wunderbare DancePop- Perlen geschaffen wurden. Wie jetzt, schon vergessen oder noch gar nicht mitbekommen?! Na dann schnell nachholen und als Aufwärmrunde „Poison“ und „Override“ vom 2018er Album „Defiance + Entropy“ abfeiern!
Parallel dazu mach ich für euch den Wiki- Erklärbär:
ROB DUST ist seit 2 Jahrzehnten recht aktiv als Produzent in der Szene und darüber hinaus, hat unter anderem mit Joachim Witt und Hubert Kah gearbeitet. Zudem gilt er als Remix- Gott und ist in dieser Position sehr gefragt und dauerhaft präsent. Garantiert habt auch ihr schon zu mehr als einem Mix von ihm eure Körper rhythmisch über die Tanzflächen dieses Planeten gleiten lassen.
MARK wiederum könnte manch offenem Geist durch sein Wirken im Duo SHELTER bekannt sein, einem wunderbaren 80s Revival- Projektes der avantgardistischen Art. Zumal MARK kein bisschen unauffällig ist, sondern neben seinem sehr großem Gesangstalent, bei gleichzeitig gar göttlicher Stimme, auch durch extravagante Bühnenoutfits auffällt. Mit seinem Compagnon von SHELTER hat er unter anderem auch ein Soloalbum von ANDY BELL (ERASURE) geschrieben und produziert. Nebenher ist der gute Mann sehr umtriebig und lieh seine Stimme einigen anderen großartigen Nummern von MATTHIAS, PSY’AVIAH und einigen mehr. KEITH ist da etwas schwerer zu fassen, hat aber unter anderem auch an vorgenannten Projekten von u.a. MATTHIAS mitgewirkt, ist schon lange als Songwriter und Soundengeneer  bekannt und hat jahrelange Erfahrung als Studio- und Live- Musiker, zudem ist er mit dem DEPECHE MODE Tribute Projekt THE DEVOU aktiv.

Das besondere an FORM ist die gekonnte Mischung: große Popnummern, die man vielleicht schnell als SynthPop in die Schublade wirft, aber doch etwas mehr zu bieten haben. Die Lyrics sind teilweise etwas dunkler, aber immer zuckersüß, die Hooks extrem gefällig und mitreißend, der Sound diskothekentauglich und an allem klebt mal mehr, mal weniger deutlich der Lack des guten Achtzigerjahre- Pops. Es ist schon bemerkenswert, wie sehr man diese Titel in das bunte Jahrzehnt verortet, ohne dass man auf die Idee kommen würde, dass es nur Kopien einer vergangenen Zeit wären. Der Sound präsentiert sich nämlich ganz klar eigenständig und modern. Das ist der Beweis, dass nach der „alten Schule“ Komponierte Musik kein bisschen altbacken daherkommen muss. Chapeau, meine Herren!

So, seid ihr warm, können wir loslegen? Fein, dann ab dafür.
Das aktuelle Album von FORM, welches am 09. April diesen Jahres erscheinen wird und bereits vorbestellbar ist, wird also auf den Namen „This World Is Ours“ hören. Alle Titel, derer es 10 auf diesem Release zu hören gibt, stammen aus den Federn von MARK und KEITH, die sich auch für die Arrangements verantwortlich zeigen. KEITH und ROB sind für die Vertonung und die Produktion aktiv gewesen. Erwähnt sei in diesem Zusammenhang auch die Schwierigkeit der Produktion aufgrund der Pandemie (in UK gab es schließlich gleich mehrere echte Lockdowns) und über Landesgrenzen hinweg (Deutschland/ Post Brexit UK).
Der erste Eindruck nach einmaligem hören war, ganz kurz zusammengefasst: wow! Im ersten Moment vermisste ich die High Energy- Nummern vom Format der eingangs in der Aufwärmrunde erwähnten Titel. Aber, sie haben nicht wirklich gefehlt, denn „This World Is Ours“ ist ein absolut rundes, wohlgefälliges und sogar erschreckend erwachsenes Album.

Aber lasst uns gemeinsam (ich akustisch, ihr hier visuell) in FORM – „This World Is Ours“ rein hören:

Eröffnet wird das Album mit „You“ (haltet hier ein Ohr in die Single, bereits verfügbar), einer kraftvoll poppigen Abrechnung über eine gescheiterte Beziehung, zumindest jedoch mit einem empathielosen Gegenüber. Zumindest legt es die Abrechnung mit dem Empfänger der Lyrics sehr nahe, dass die/der Protagonist/in dieser Story schwer enttäuscht wurde. Wir erleben eine deutliche Abrechnung, die dabei aber so elegant und geschmeidig rüberkommt, dass man sofort aufstehen und Beifall klatschen möchte. Man verzeihe mir manch Plattitüden, aber der Song baut sich so ruhig elegant auf und flattert einem wie ein Tanz in einer lauen Sommernacht um die Ohren, dass man gar nicht weiß, wie man dies in Worte eintüten soll. Die Gefühle, die in „here“ zum Ausdruck kommen, kennt wohl so ziemlich jede*r. Gefangen irgendwo zwischen Traum und Paralyse. Ein herrlicher Popsong, für Größeres bestimmt. „Succumb“ wiederum ist schwere Kost, die anfangs auch schwer balladesque vorgertragen wird. Allerdings wendet sich im Song die Sicht der Dinge, was auch musikalisch einen Ausbruch Richtung High Energy findet, um zum Abschluss nochmals richtig deep zu enden. Ein Arrangement vom Allerfeinsten, das in der aktuellen Musikwelt seinesgleichen sucht. In „Extinction“ erheben FORM den Zeigefinger. Nicht um zu belehren, sondern um darauf hinzuweisen, dass wir unserem Schicksal nicht ohnmächtig gegenüberstehen. Sehr gefühlvoll und dennoch energetisch instrumentiert und Mark zeigt, wie sehr er mit seiner Stimme Stimmungen porträtieren und erzeugen kann. Geradezu Discolastig wird es mit „Glitter“, welches thematisch in dieselbe Kerbe schlägt, wie gerade gehörter Track, jedoch eher das Musik gewordene Meme mit dem ohrfeigenden Batman ist. Wer es jetzt nicht versteht, rafft es nimmermehr. Die zweite Hälfte des Tonträgers beginnt mit „Protector“, einem äußerst gefühlvollen Nachruf, eine massive Attacke auf das Gefühlszentrum des Hörers. Und da ist sie ja doch, die High Energy- Hymne! „Hazed“ lebt durch Dancefloorsound, starkem Achtziger Touch und einer Stimme, die zwischen allen möglichen und unmöglichen Oktaven spazieren geht. Das Lied ist der pure audiophile Sex, in jeder Hinsicht. „Viva“ ist Balsam für geschundene Seelen, der Zuspruch den man hin und wieder braucht. Schwierig wird es bei „Athenian“, denn da wird die schwierige Beziehung zwischen einer extrem ergebenen verliebten Person und einer kühlen undurchsichtigen Persönlichkeit beschrieben. Den Abschluss macht das positivistische „World“ und…. Ja, verdammt, schon wieder vorbei.

Fazit:

Ganz subjektiv ein viel, viel, viel zu kurzes Album.
Objektiv ein Meisterwerk der elektronischen Popmusik. Die Kompositionen ausgefeilt, die Arrangements gekonnt, die Texte nicht trivial, aber eben auch nicht belehrend und abgehoben wissenschaftlich. Ihr bekommt hier eines der besten Synthpop- Alben der letzten Jahre, rein qualitativ betrachtet. Natürlich sind rein objektive Betrachtungsweisen bei Musik schwierig, aber wie soll man es sonst einordnen? Klar ist, das es den Rezensenten völlig abgeholt hat.
Rob Dust steht für einen enorm tanzbaren Sound, hat sich aber diesbezüglich hier gekonnt etwas zurück gehalten. Es ist fast durchgängig tanzbar, aber eben keine Clubtrack- Sammlung. Und das ist auch gut so, denn das würde zum einen dem Talent von Mark und Keith nicht gerecht werden und zum anderen haben reine Dancefloor- Cracks im Moment situationsbedingt gar keine Legitimation. Daher ist das Ergreifen der Chance, guten Pop an die Hörer zu bringen ein sehr gekonnter Schachzug.
Somit der etwas dreiste Aufruf an die Musikwelt: nehmt euch ein Beispiel daran, verlasst festgefahrene Pfade, nehmt euch Zeit und investiert in eure Kompositionen, die Konsumenten werden es Euch danken.

They´re back! Who? Well FORM, the project featuring ROB DUST, MARK R BEBB and KEITH TRIGWELL, that created some wonderful dance pop pearls with a heavy 80´s punch. WTF, already forgotten or not even noticed?! Then catch up quickly and celebrate “Poison” and “Override” from the 2018 album “Defiance + Entropy” as a warm-up session!
Simultaneously, I am going to give you the wiki biog. of the band: ROB DUST has been quite active as a producer in the scene and beyond for two decades now, he has worked with Joachim Witt and Hubert Kah, among others. In addition, he is considered the god of remixes and is in great demand in this role and permanently present. You too are almost guaranteed to have let your body slide rhythmically over the dance floors of this planet to more than one mix of him. MARK, on the other hand, could be known to some through his work in the duo SHELTER, a wonderful 80s revival project of the avant-garde kind. Especially since MARK is not a bit inconspicuous, but in addition to his very great singing talent, with a divine voice at the same time, also stands out with extravagant stage outfits . With his companion from SHELTER, he has also written and produced a solo album to ANDY BELL (ERASURE). At the same time, the good man is very active and loaned his voice to some other great numbers by MATTHIAS, PSY’AVIAH and a few more. KEITH is more an enigma, but has also worked on the aforementioned projects by MATTHIAS, among others, and has long been known as a songwriter and sound engineer and has years of experience as a studio and live musician, and he also has a DEPECHE MODE tribute project called ‘The Devout’ (formerly ‘Speak & Spell’), as well as having played at Glastonbury.

The special thing about FORM is the skilful mixture: big pop numbers that you might quickly throw in the drawer as SynthPop, but have a little more to offer. The lyrics are sometimes a bit darker, but always sugar-sweet, the hooks extremely pleasing and rousing, the sound suitable for discos and everything sticks sometimes more, sometimes less clearly, the paint of good 80s pop. It is remarkable how much you place these titles in the colourful decade without getting the idea that it is just copied. The sound is clearly independent and modern. This is the proof that music composed according to the “old school” doesn’t have to come across as a bit old-fashioned. Chapeau, gentlemen! So, are you warmed up yet, can we get started now? Fine, then off we go!

The current album by FORM, which will be released on April 9th this year and can already be pre-ordered, will be called “This World Is Ours”. All the tracks, of which there are 10 to be heard on this release, have been penned by MARK and KEITH, who are also responsible for the arrangements. KEITH and ROB were active in the setting and production. In this context, the difficulty of production due to the pandemic (in the UK there were several real lockdowns) and across national borders (Germany / UK, Post Brexit) should also be mentioned. The first impression after hearing it once was, in a nutshell: wow! At first I missed the high energy numbers from the format of the titles mentioned in the warm-up session. But, they weren’t really missing, because “This World Is Ours” is an absolutely well-rounded, pleasing and even terrifyingly grown-up album.

But let’s listen together (I’m listening to the audio, you can listen here visually for now) in FORM – This World Is Ours:

The album opens with “You” (keep an ear to the single here), a powerful pop-up account of a failed relationship, but at least has a counterpart without empathy. At least the settlement with the recipient of the lyrics suggests that the protagonist was badly disappointed in this story. We experience a clear accounting, but it comes across so elegant and smooth, that you want to get up immediately and applaud. Forgive me for some platitudes, but the song is so calm and elegant and flutters around your ears like a dance on a mild summer night that you don’t even know how to put it into words. Pretty much everyone knows the feelings that are expressed in “here”. Caught somewhere between dream and paralysis. A wonderful pop song, intended for bigger things. “Succumb”, on the other hand, is heavy fare, which is initially presented in a difficult balladesque manner. However, the outlook of things changes in the song, which also breaks out musically towards high energy, only to end really deeply at the end. An arrangement at its finest that is unparalleled in the current music world. In “Extinction”, FORM raise their forefinger. Not to teach, but to point out that we are not powerless in the face of our fate. Very soulful and yet energetically orchestrated and Mark shows how much he can portray and create moods with his voice. It gets downright disco-heavy with “Glitter”, which thematically hits the same line as the track you just heard, but is more like the meme that has become the background music with the slapping of Batman. If you don’t understand by this point, you will never get it. The second half of this release begins with “Protector”, an extremely soulful obituary, a massive attack on the listener’s emotional centre. And there it is, the high energy anthem! “Hazed” lives through a dance floor sound, with a strong eighties touch and a voice that massages up and down every possible and impossible octave. The song is pure audiophile sex, in every way. “Viva” is pure balm for tortured souls, just the encouragement that you need every now and then. Things becomes fraught with “Athenian”, because it describes the difficult relationship between an extremely devoted person in love and one with a cooler, more opaque personality. The conclusion is reached by the positive “World” and…. Yeah, damn it, it’s over again.

Conclusion:

Subjectively much, much, much too short an album. Objectively a masterpiece of electronic pop music. The compositions are polished, the arrangements skilful, the lyrics most certainly not trivial, but also not instructive and abstractly scientific. Here you get one of the best synthpop albums of the last few years, from a purely qualitative point of view. Of course, purely objective ways of looking at music are difficult, but how else can you classify it? What is clear is that it completely captivated the reviewer. Rob Dust represents a huge danceable sound, but has skillfully held back a little in this regard. It is danceable almost entirely, but not a club track collection. And that’s a good thing, because on the one hand that would not do justice to the talents of Mark and Keith and on the other hand, pure dance floor tracks have no legitimacy at all at the moment, depending on the situation. So seizing the chance to bring good pop to the listener is a very skilful move. So the somewhat bold call to the music world: use this album as a benchmark, deviate from the beaten track, take your time and invest heavily in your compositions, your music buying public will thank you for it.
