Review: Beauty over Beast – MARKO HIETALAs neues Solo-Album “Pyre of the Black Heart” ist da!

NIGHTWISH-Bassist und TAROT-Gründer MARKO HIETALA hat viele Jahre gebraucht, bis er bereit war und genug Zeit hatte, um uns seine Seele auf dem Silbertablett zu präsentieren. Jetzt ist es soweit! Haben wir den bärtigen Mann mit der rauen Stimme all die Jahre etwa falsch eingeschätzt? Man könnte zu diesem Schluss kommen, wenn man “Pyre Of The Black Heart” zum ersten Mal hört. Die finnische Version des Albums in der Landessprache des Künstlers erschien bereits einige Monate zuvor unter dem gleichbedeutenden Titel ” Mustan Sydämen Rovio”. Doch damit der Rest der Welt an diesem außergewöhnlichen Werk auch Teil haben kann, folgt nun das englischsprachige Release. Und wie klingt es? Ganz anders, als erwartet!

So haben wir Marko noch nie gehört!

Als jahrzehntelanger NIGHTWISH- und TAROT-Fan schämt man sich fast, dass man während all der Zeit offenbar gar nicht zu dem Phänomen Marko Hietala vorzudringen in der Lage war. Wie kommt es eigentlich, dass wir dazu neigen, Bassisten so wenig Vielschichtigkeit zuzutrauen? Wenn man die einschlägigen Bassisten-Memes durchgeht, die im Internet kursieren, wird schnell klar, was die landläufige Meinung zu diesen Musikern ist: Sie sind einfach gestrickt, halten sich im Hintergrund, sind sozial unbeholfen und oft isoliert, während Sänger und Gitarristen den Ruhm und die Frauen kriegen. Können wir hier und jetzt ein für alle mal festhalten, dass das Bullshit ist? Danke! Natürlich bekam MARKO HIETALA durch seine mehrfache Rolle als Co-Sänger, Co-Songwriter und Instrumentalist bei NIGHTWISH durchaus schon mehr Aufmerksamkeit als der handelsübliche Bassist. Aber wirklich ausleben und seinen ganz eigenen Stil in allen Facetten zeigen, kann man eher schlecht in einer Band, deren Konzept längst feststeht. “[…] hatte ich noch einige musikalische Entdeckungen auf Lager, die ein bisschen persönlicher klingen und auch irgendwie anders sind… Man hat definitiv einen anderen Ansatz, wenn man einfach aus dem Blauen heraus Songs schreibt und sich nicht nach einer Band richtet, die bereits ihren eigenen Stil, Klang und ihre eigene Vision hat.”, sagt Hietala dazu.

So erklärt sich auch das scheinbare Durcheinander der Stilelemente auf “Pyre Of The Black Heart”: Der Ausnahmemusiker hat einfach drauflos geschrieben und sich selbst keinerlei Grenzen gesetzt. Und so kam am Ende ein Werk dabei heraus, das vor allem eins ist: Intim! Darum erscheint das Album auch unter seinem richtigen Namen MarKo Hietala, bei der uns bislang bekannten Schreibweise mit ‘c’ handelt es sich lediglich um seinen Künstlernamen. Wer nun also Hard Rock oder Heavy Metal alá TAROT von der Soloscheibe erwartet, ist gründlich auf dem Holzweg! Es ist viel mehr so, als würde man eine private Musical-Aufführung besuchen – allein, als einziger Zuhörer in einem kleinen Theater mit Marko auf der Bühne, beleuchtet nur von einem altersschwachen Scheinwerfer. Eine Tour durch Markos Seele ist es, die uns hier offeriert wird. Und die ist keineswegs so rauh, laut und rockig, wie wir ihn bislang eingestuft haben. Natürlich klingen hie und da harte Rock- und Metalelemente durch, aber keineswegs dominant. Stattdessen bekommen wir es hier überwiegend mit bluesigen Midtempo-Nummern und progressiv eingefärbtem Singer-Songwriter-Material zu tun. Am ehesten vergleichen lässt sich der Stil ansatzweise mit dem Song “While Your Lips Are Still Red”, den Marko ebenfalls interpretiert und der auf der NIGHTWISH-Single “Amaranth” enthalten war.

Es wird autobiographisch. Von steinigen Hürden und was beim Überwinden hilft

Rock(s) ist/sind also spärlich gesät, aber “Stones” gab es in Markos Leben offenbar genug, denn von diesem Thema handelt die gleichnamige, erste Single. “Heart of stone”, “circle of stones”, “with stones in my mouth I kept singing the blues” – hier werden eindeutig Hindernisse beschrieben, die der Finne während seines Lebens überwinden musste. Der Chorus ist dabei rockig und sehr eingängig. Man kann vor seinem geistigen Auge quasi sehen, wie Marko auf seinem Lebensweg voranschreitet, umringt und bedroht von kleinen und großen Steinen, die aus dem Boden hervorwachsen, bisweilen auch von oben auf ihn herabregnen und von anderen geworfen werden. Und doch hat er alle diese Steine überwunden, ist über sie hinausgewachsen und hat sie sich untertan gemacht, sie in seine Musik hineingezwungen, frei nach dem Sprichwort: Aus Steinen, die einem in den Weg gelegt werden, kann man auch etwas Schönes bauen. Wir haben Glück, dass Marko bei all diesen Steinen im Leben Musiker geworden ist und nicht Geologe. Letztere empörten sich bei youtube bereits scherzhaft über die Zeile “Boring, thankless, lifeless stones”. Sir Terry Pratchett prophezeihte übrigens schon 1994 die Etablierung von “Musik mit Steinen drin” im Buch “Rollende Steine”. Nun hat er Recht behalten. Übrigens gibt es zu diesem Song auch ein sehr schlicht gehaltenes Musikvideo.

Doch was hat Marko die Kraft verliehen, diese Hürden zu überwinden und unbeirrt voranzuschreiten? Eine Ahnung erhalten wir im nächsten Song “The Voice Of My Father”, einer wundervollen Ballade darüber, wie unsere Eltern unser Wesen prägen und uns unterstützen. Markos Vater war offenbar etwas non-konform unterwegs gewesen. Das klingt zumindest in der Zeile an, wo es heißt, dass die Himmelstore wahrscheinlich beiden – Vater und Sohn – verschlossen bleiben werden. Doch Marko traut seinem Vater zu, dieses Verbot zu ignorieren und einfach durchzumarschieren. Es wird deutlich, dass Marko seinen Vater als Teil seiner selbst betrachtet und auch dass er der Meinung ist, er habe ihn auf den Weg des Musikers geführt. Vielleicht war sein Vater auch einer der Faktoren, wieso “Mustan Sydämen Rovio” letztlich auch auf Englisch herausgebracht wurde. Finanzielle Interessen (Markterweiterung), wie vielfach unterstellt worden ist, kann man getrost ausschließen. Denn Marko ist ein finanziell unabhängiger Musiker, der durch die Einnahmen mit NIGHTWISH mehr als abgesichert ist und sein eigenes Album völlig frei produzieren konnte. Markos Vater war Englischlehrer und Marko sagte einmal in einem Interview, er habe hart daran gearbeitet, gut Englisch zu lernen – für seinen Vater. Nun ist diese Hommage an ihn als zweite Single zum Album mitsamt Lyric-Video erschienen und wir lernen, dass Marko mit seinem Vater gesungen hat und sich ihm stets nahe fühlt, wenn er selbst singt (“Still I hear how you sang with me”/ “Sing, my son and I’ll be with you”). Die wundervoll instrumentierte Bridge und das Ende des Songs dürften bei vielen für Gänsehaut sorgen, wenn das nicht schon längst durch den Text vorher passiert war.

 

Keine Grenzen! Wir steigen in tiefe Höhlen der Melancholie hinab

Die Ballade verklingt, der Player springt zu Song 3 “Star, Sand And Shadow” und wir reißen erstaunt die Augen und Ohren auf: Synthies! Wir bekommen ein Elektro-Intro auf die Ohren, das anderthalb Minuten dauert. “Wirklich, selbst wenn ich eine total unsinnige Idee hatte (die mir gefiel), habe ich sie einfach ohne zu zögern benutzt“. Also wenn ich überhaupt ein Ziel hatte, dann war das, mir selbst einfach keine Grenzen zu setzen, sondern stattdessen ein unberechenbares, spontanes, abenteuerliches, wildes und zugleich intimes Solo-Album zu erschaffen.” Nun, das ist MARKO HIETALA mehr als gelungen! Aber inhaltlich gibt es hier auch wieder Trauriges zu bezeugen. Es wird ein Verlust metaphernreich beschrieben und umschrieben. Die unüberbrückbare Distanz der Sterne, die Eigenschaft von Sand, einem durch die Finger zu rieseln und die Unmöglichkeit, nach einem Schatten zu greifen und ihn festzuhalten – dieses Gefühl der Ohnmacht wird im Song beschrieben und das eindringlich langgezogene “Evermore” (auf Deutsch “(für) immer”, in der finnischen Version als “Ainiaan” noch sehnsuchtsvoller!) transportiert viel Trauer über den Verlust eines geliebten Menschen.

Mit “Dead God’s Son” gehen wir dann über zu einer Nummer, die mit wellenförmig dahingleitenden Strophen mit Akustikgitarren und einem starken, rockigen Chorus aufwartet. Das Hauptgefühl, das der Song vermittelt, ist Einsamkeit. Marko wird als feuriger Ball vom Himmel geschleudert und landet in einer rauen, fremden Umgebung voller Knochen und Felsen. Ein lebensfeindlicher, schroffer Ort, an dem er sich schwerlich orientieren kann. Eine Reise ins Ungewisse erwartet ihn und somit auch uns als Zuhörer. Man wird unweigerlich an Marvels “Thor” oder die Engel in “Dogma” erinnert, die einfach auf die Erde fallen und dann unter den Sterblichen eine Zeit lang zurechtkommen müssen. Die Mitte des Albums weist überdurchschnittlich viele dunkle Gedanken auf und doch bekommt man das Gefühl, dass diese Dinge in der Vergangenheit des Sängers liegen, sie werden jetzt sozusagen musikalisch aufgearbeitet und abgeschlossen. “For You” bildet keine Ausnahme, hier wird die rückwärtsgewandte Perspektive ganz deutlich. Es geht um einen Abschied und darum, etwas oder jemanden gehen zu lassen und einen gemeinsamen Pfad, der sich in der Dunkelheit verlor. Doch laut Marko hätte auch Licht nicht wirklich geholfen, diese Trennung zu verhindern, dies vermittelt also Mutlosigkeit und Unausweichlichkeit.
Dass die Hälfte des Songs danach nur noch aus Instrumentals, unterlegt von Summen besteht, bedeutet sicherlich einen Prozess des Nachdenkens, des Abschließens. Der Song “For You” stellt für das Album eine Art “Scharnier” da, denn danach geht die “Achterbahnfahrt der Gefühle” plötzlich bergauf. Die Nachdenklichkeit wird ein Stück weit abgelegt und das Tempo angezogen. Die Zweifel sind vergessen, der Blick wandert von der dunklen Vergangenheit hin in die Zukunft.

Power und Geschwindigkeit nehmen zu – Ausklang mit Mahnung

“I Am The Way” kommt sehr selbstbewusst und kraftvoll daher. Die erste Assoziation an dieser Stelle ist natürlich Jesus Christus, der laut Bibel gesagt haben soll “Ich bin der Weg, die Wahrheit und das Leben”. Marko scheint sich von solchen Heilsversprechen ironisch zu distanzieren, auch wenn er beim Projekt DARK SARAH schon einmal in die Rolle eines Gottes geschlüpft war. Wer schon Interviews mit ihm gelesen hat, weiß, dass der bescheidene Musiker eine ehrliche Haut ist und nichts von Star-Allüren hält. Zusagen wie “I am the way”, “I will take you home”, “I am the answer to your dream” erinnern stark an Werbeversprechen und werden im Text des Liedes immer gleich “entwertet” (“lead you astray”, “…the dream; I made you see”). Hier zeigt sich eine hohe Reife des Künstlers. Er hat erkannt, dass es keinen Messias gibt, der alle Antworten kennt und dem man nur zu folgen braucht. Nein, wir müssen unser Leben schon selbst in die Hand nehmen. Jetzt hatte man sich gerade an die ruhigen Midtempo-Songs gewöhnt, da reißt es einen schon wieder vom Hocker! “Runner Of The Railways” legt durchgängig von Beginn bis zum Schluss ein atemberaubendes Tempo vor – der Name ist Programm! Gitarren und Streicherklang peitschen einen die ganze Zeit voran und im Chorus kommen Chöre mit schnellen Stakkato-Einlagen zum Zuge. Dieser Song unterscheidet sich in Tempo und Ausrichtung deutlich vom Rest des Albums und jetzt wissen wir, was Marko mit “unberechenbar, spontan, abenteuerlich und wild” meinte.

Beim Folgesong “Death March for Freedom” tritt auch das Hauptinstrument des Künstlers, die Bassgitarre, endlich mehr in den Vordergrund und gibt nicht nur während des ansprechenden Intros den Rhythmus vor. Der Refrain mutet hymnisch und wie aus einer Rockoper alá MEAT LOAF oder AVANTASIA an und klingt einfach nur cool und groovy. Die letzten drei Songs sind textlich grundsätzlich etwas schwieriger zu verstehen, hier wird es sehr abstrakt und metaphorisch. Mit “I Dream” entfaltet sich noch einmal eine Power-Ballade, die sich im zweiten Drittel deutlich zuspitzt. Es werden recht absurde Situationen und Rollen beschrieben, in die der Künstler gern schlüpfen würde, aber immer gefolgt von “…but I can only dream on”. Ein innerer Persönlichkeitskonflikt wird bei der Zeile “I am the one, whose teeth I’d like to kick out” deutlich und wieder geht es auch um Wege, die in die Irre führen. Der Song läuft so sanft und verträumt aus, wie er begonnen hat und schon sind wir mit “Truth Shall Set You Free” am Ende des Albums angelangt.

Ein wunderschön ruhiger Song mit Akustik-Begleitung und Geigenmelodie, der manch einen Zuhörer zu Tränen rühren wird. Was man aus dem Text heraushört, ist plötzlich dann ein überraschender Appell an uns alle, die Schöpfung zu bewahren und eine deutliche Absage an die Gier und Maßlosigkeit der Menschen und ihre Hybris, die Welt vollkommen beherrschen, zu entzaubern und zerstören zu wollen. Es wird die beseelte Erde besungen: Gesichter in den Wolken, das Rascheln der Blätter im Wind, Füße im nassen Gras und die Magie einer Mondlichtnacht. Und dann folgt die wichtige Botschaft an uns: “I can’t let you have the world, but it’s there for you” und in Strophe zwei “…with the joy of living you’re about to kill? Stop! Life is now and not then!”. Da muss man erstmal schlucken und wir täten gut daran, Markos Warnung ernstzunehmen und die Welt um uns herum mehr zu respektieren, sowie sie zu bewahren. Ein so ernstes Thema in solch einen sanften Song einzubauen, der mit wunderschön verträumten Melodien einhergeht, das ist eine Meisterleistung. Weniger überheblich und belehrend kann man den Zeigefinger nicht erheben, wir bekommen nur Denkanstöße serviert, eingewickelt in ein Gespinst aus wohltuendem Klang. Was für ein schöner Schlusspunkt dieses hand- und herzgemachten Werkes!

Fazit: Ein wundervoll intimes Album, was wir nun auch live zu hören bekommen sollen

Was würden die meisten Künstler nun mit solch einem intimen und unkonventionellen Album tun? Vermutlich würden sie es in der Schublade verschwinden lassen und damit zufrieden sein, der Welt eine weitere Facette ihrer selbst für besinnliche Stunden vermacht zu haben. Nicht so MARKO HIETALA! Für ihn stand von vorneherein fest: Diese Lieder müssen auf die Bühne! Zumindest ein einziges Mal, denn am Horizont zeichnet sich schon das nächste große Album von Markos Hauptband NIGHTWISH ab – samt zugehöriger Welttournee. Der Künstler mahnt also, dass es vielleicht nur diese eine Tour geben wird, danach wird NIGHTWISH wieder das tun, was es ihm zufolge schon seit 20 Jahren tut, wie er augenzwinkernd anmerkt: “Meine Zeit fressen” .

MARKO HIETALA ist mit “Pyre Of The Black Heart” seinen ganz eigenen Weg gegangen, oder besser gesagt: viele verschiedene Wege und hat alle überrascht. Er hat seinem beeindruckenden Lebenswerk einen Meilenstein hinzugefügt und unsere Szene mit seinem Rock-Musical bereichert. Dabei hat er sämtliche Konventionen geopfert, um durchgängig authentisch zu sein und hatte den Mut, jeder seiner mitunter verrückten Ideen Raum zu geben. Wir sehen hier also, was passiert, wenn ein Künstler völlig frei von Vorgaben durch das Label und ohne den Druck, kommerziell erfolgreich sein zu müssen, ein Werk erschaffen kann. So sollte Musik eigentlich sein, denn so war sie gemeint!
Man braucht Mut und Offenheit, um sich auf das Album einzulassen und sollte versuchen, sich vorher von jeglicher Erwartung freizumachen. Dann kann man dieses Experiment in Ruhe genießen und MARKO HIETALA künftig mit ganz anderen Augen sehen.

Beauty over Beast – MARKO HIETALAs new solo-album “Pyre Of The Black Heart” is here!

The bassist of NIGHTWISH and founder of TAROT MARKO HIETALA has finally found time and is ready to present us no less than his soul. Now time has come! Have we been wrong about this bearded man with the rasp voice for years? This could be the conclusion after hearing “Pyre Of The Black Heart” for the first time. The other version of the album, sung in the artist’s natural tongue finnish was already released months ago under the name “Mustan sydämen rovio”, which means the same as “Pyre Of The Black Heart”. But to share this outstanding work with the rest of the world, the release in english is about to come. How does it sound? Totally different than you might expect!

Our promise: New sounds of Marko, you haven’t heard before

As a longstanding fan of NIGHTWISH and TAROT you may feel ashamed for not having understood the phenomenon MARKO HIETALA through the years in it’s entirety. How does it come we often think bassplayers are’nt capable of doing something complex? When you check the usual bassplayer memes on the internet, it comes clear very quickly what most of the people think about them: They use to be modest minded, stay in the back, ungainly and isolated, while singers and guitarists get all the fame and the women. Can we please register at that point, that all this is bullshit? Thank you very much! However, MARKO HIETALA used to gain enough attention because of his several skills in singing, playing (bass)guitar and being even involved in songwriting. But it’s kind of unpossible to run free and let his own style shine out while being stuck in a band with a fix concept.
“…there has been a lot of musical discoveries that have sounded a little more personal and also somewhat different…There is definitely a different kind of mind-set when you are just writing something out of the blue and there’s simply zero needto justify any of these ideas to a band who already has its own style, sound and vision”, Hietala says.
So that could be the reason for the mixed elements of style found at “Pyre Of The Black Heart”. The outstanding musician just wrote on without accepting any boundaries. So that’s how an album arised finally, that is most of all intimate. And that’s why it is going to be released under the real name “MarKo Hietala”, because the other spelling with ‘c’ has been just the artist’s name. Whoever will expect lots of hard rock or heavy metal on this solo album now, will bark up the wrong tree. It is like visiting a private musical show, alone, just on your very own in a small theatre with Marko on stage, hardly enlightened by a geriatric single headlight. A guided tour through the chambers of Marko’s soul is offered here. And this isn’t as much rough, loud or rocking as you might have expected. Of course there are enough rock and metal elements on the album, but they don’t dominate but just support the melodies and lyrics. We get bluesy midtempo-songs and prog rock material predominantly instead. Maybe it’s most likely comparable to the song “While Your Lips Are Still Red”, which was sung by Marko and included in the NIGHTWISH-single “Amaranth”.

It’s going to be autobiographical now. About stones as boundaries and how to overcome them

We learned to not expect many rock(s) but what Marko witnessed enough during his life are stones, because that’s the topic of the first single: “Stones”! “Heart of stone”, “circle of stones”, “with stones in my mouth I kept singing the blues” – boundaries are desribed here which the fin had to overcome once. The chorus is rocky and very catchy. You can imagine easily how Marko moves forward on his path of life surrounded by many small and big stones, which rise from the ground sometimes and fall from the sky sometimes, too or even being thrown at him by other people. But he has overcome all these stones, has grown bigger than them, subdued them, forced them into his music as the popular saying is: You can build something beautiful out of stones which come to your way! With so many stones in his life we can be glad with Marko became a musician instead of a geologist. These scientists were kidding on youtube about disagreeing with the line “Boring, thankless, lifeless stones”. Did you know Sir Terry Pratchett foretold “Music with Rocks in” in 1994? Now this prophecy has been fullfilled!

But where did the strenght of Marko come from to overcome these boundaries and to move forward with a brave heart? We get a clue about that within the next song “The Voice Of My Father”, a wonderful ballad about our parents supporting us and influencing our character. Markos father seems to have been kind of a non-conformist. We can guess that from the line, where Marko is singing that the gates of heaven may be denied for both – father and son. But Marko is confident about his father might ignore this prohibition and just walk through. It becomes very clear to us that Marko’s father is an important part of him and maybe guided him to become a musician. Probably his father was even one of the main reasons for the album being released in english language, too. We don’t have to think about financial reasons (market expansion), as Marko is financially independent by being a member of NIGHTWISH. He was able to produce the album totally sovereign. Markos father has been an English teacher and Marko told us at an interview that he used to work very hard to become fluent in English once – just for his father. Now this single is released with a lyric video as a tribute to that man and we learn that Marco has sung with his father long ago and is feeling close to him every time he sings (“Still I hear how you sang with me”/ “Sing, my son and I’ll be with you”). The wonderful instrumented bridge and the end of the song may cause goosebumps if that hasn’t already happen before during the song.

 

No borders! We will dig deep in the caves of melancholia now!

The ballad is fading and the player switches to song No. 3 “Stars, Sand And Shadow” and we open wide our eyes and ears: Synthie sounds! We get to hear an electro intro which lasts for one and a half minute.
“What I mean is that when I was coming up with the musical thoughts for this solo record, I was able to do simply anything without limits. Really, even if I invented some completely wacky idea (that I liked), I just utilised it immediately without hesitation. So if I had a goal, it was to not have any kind of limits, but to prepare an unpredictable, spontaneous, adventurous, ferocious and intimate solo record”.
So MARKO HIETALA reached that goal for sure! But again we have to witness sad stuff here. A painful loss is described with many metaphors. The insurmountable distance to the stars, the quality of sand, to rill through your fingers and the impossibility to grab a shadow and to hold it tight – this feeling of impotence is described in the song and the sustained “evermore” (sounds even more powerful and full of desire in the finnish version: “ainiaan”) carrying grief about the loss of a loved one.

With “Dead God’s Son” we proceed to a song with undulate verses accompanied by acoustic guitars and a strong rocky chorus again. The main feeling the song evokes is loneliness. Marko gets thrown from the sky as a fiery ball, landing in a rough, foreign landscape filled with bones and rocks. A life-hostile, harsh place which makes it nearly impossible to orientate. A journey into the unknown awaits him and us as the audience. We are reminded of Marvel’s “Thor” or the angels in “Dogma”, who just fall to the ground and have to live with the mortals for a time without really knowing how do do that properly. The middle part of the album deals with many dark thoughts but these seem to belong to the past of the singer, they get reconditioned and finished. “For You” is no exception, with this song the reactionary point of view becomes obvious. It deals with a farewell and is about letting somebody go and about a common path which got separated and was lost in the darkness. But Marko says, even if there had been light nothing would have changed, so it’s about despondency and inescapability. The last half of the song consists just of instrumental parts and humming, that gives us the impression of a process of contemplation and conclusion. The song “For You” acts like a kind of “hinge” of this album, because after that the “rollercoaster of emotions” goes upwards. The reflectiveness gets left behind and the velocity speeds up. The doubts are forgotten and the point of view changes from past to the future.

Power and speed grow – Finale with admonition

“I Am The Way” sounds very powerful and confident. First we think about Jesus Christ, who said once, according to the bible: “I am the way, and the truth and the life”. But Marko seems to dissociate from these promises of salvation ironically, regardless of the fact that he has played the part of a god already in the project DARK SARAH. Whoever studied interviews with Marko knows, that this musician is an honest soul and doesn’t like airs and graces. Promises in the song like “I am the way”, “I’ll take you home”, “I am the answer to your dream” reminds us of advertisements and get immediateley devalued within the lyrics (“lead you astray; “…the dream I made you see”). A high maturity of the artist is shown here. He is aware of the fact, that there is no messiah who knows all the answers and whom you just have to follow to gain salvation. We have to take responsibilty for our own life instead! We had just habituated to the calm midtempo songs but now we get knocked our socks off. “Runner Of The Railways” gives us full speed from the beginning to the end – the name says it all! Guitars and string sounds boost us forward and within the chorus we can witness choires with staccato. This song is completely different from the others and now we know what Marko meant with “unpredictable, spontaneous, adventurous, ferocious…”

In the following song “Death March For Freedom” Marko’s main instrument bass guitar has a dominant part not just in the intro. The chorus comes very anthemic, like taken from a rock opera by MEAT LOAF or AVANTASIA. It just sounds cool and groovy. These last songs of the album are more difficult to understand, because it gets abstract and metaphoric a lot. With “I Dream” again a powerful ballad unfolds and intensifies from the last third to the very end. Strange roles and situations are discribed in this song, in which the artist would like to slip in, but always followed by “…but I can only dream on”. An inner conflict manifests in the line “I am the one whose teeth I’d like to kick out” and again the song deals with paths which lead astray. The song fades at the end as soft and dreamy as it began and now, with “Truth Shall Set You Free” we’ve reached the end of the album.

A wonderful calm song, again accompanied by acoustic guitar sounds and violins, which may move you to tears. What emerges from the lyrics is suddenly an appeal to us, to protect the creation and a plain refusal to the human greed and exorbitance and their will to rule, debunk and destroy the earth. The soulful nature gets extolled: Faces in the clouds, whispering leaves in the wind, barefeet in the grass and the magic of moonlight. And then the important message for us becomes clear: “I can’t let you have the world, but it’s there for you” and in verse No. two “…with the joy of living you’re about to kill? Stop! Life is now and not then!”. We should really think about that warning of Marko and take it serious and therefore preserve and respect nature. To put a very serious topic like that into such a gentle song, which comes along with such a dreamy melody is truly a masterpiece. You cannot rise the moral pointing finger less arrogant and didactive! We just get thought-provoking impulses, wrapped in a weave of soothing sound. What a pleasent final point for this album, made from hands and heart!

Conclusion: A wonderful piece of art, which we need to experience live now!

What would most of the artists do which such an intimate and unorthodox album? They would probable put it into drawer and be satisfied with having given another facet of theirselves to the world. But MARKO HIETALA acts different! For him there was no doubt: These songs need to be played on stage! At least for one single time, beause there will be lots of work do be done with NIGHTWISH’s new album and tour, coming up soon. The artist warns us that there might be just this one tour and afterwards NIGHTWISH will do what it has done for twenty years: “consuming time”.

MARKO HIETALA has found his very own path with “Pyre Of The Black Heart”, or even several paths and has surprised all of us. He has added a real mile stone to his lifework and enriched our music scene with his rock musical. Thereby he got rid of any and all conventions just to be authentic to the fullest and has been brave enough, to facilitate every one of his crazy ideas. Here we can see what happens, if an artist is free from any record company’s defaults and pressure and if there is no need to create a great financial success. This is what music or any kind of art should be like! You need courage and have to be open minded when you start to listen to this album and you should break free from any expectations previously. Then you will be able to enjoy this experiment and see MARKO HIETALA with different eyes from now on. Enjoy!
