SABATON auf Kreuzzug durch Europa mit APOCALYPTICA und AMARANTHE

Die Zeiten sind vorbei, als sich SABATON noch als kleine schwedische Panzergrenadiere im Vorprogramm anderer Bands Gehör verschaffen mussten. Mittlerweile füllen die Schweden mühelos große Hallen und Stadien im europäischen In- und Ausland.
So auch heute in Oberhausen – schon der Blick auf den Parkplatz der Loading Area verspricht Großes: Tourbusse und eine beachtliche Anzahl an Trucks lassen erahnen, dass heute eher geklotzt als gekleckert wird. So ganz unerwartet ist das nun auch nicht, schließlich haben SABATON auf den Festivals des vergangenen Jahres auch nicht gerade mit einer dezenten Bühnenshow aufgewartet. So ein klein wenig Pyro darf es auch sein, schließlich haben wir ja gerade so etwas ähnliches wie Winter und einige Fans harren schon seit einer Weile vor der Halle aus, um einen Platz in der ersten Reihe zu ergattern. Diese haben zurecht eine kleine Feuershow zum Aufwärmen verdient! Da man sich nicht nur auf Pyro-Effekte als Standheizung verlassen will, und wie es für eine Tour auch eben einfach üblich ist, sind auch noch zwei Supportbands mit an Bord, die das geneigte Publikum auf eine wohlige Betriebstemperatur bringen sollen.
Den Startschuss hierfür legen AMARANTHE. Die Modern Metal-Kapelle, die in gekonnter Manier Extreme Metal mit elektronischen Elementen verbindet, sticht unter anderem dadurch hervor, dass sie direkt auf drei Vokalisten zurückgreift. Die Clear Vocals von Frontfrau Elize Ryd und Nils Molin harmonieren hierbei in ausgewogener Melange mit den kräftigen Growls Henrik Englunds. Auch wenn der dänisch-schwedischen Kombo oft die Nähe zu trivialer Popmusik angelastet wird, hier in Oberhausen kommt diese Mischung richtig gut an. Nur bleibt im Hinterkopf die Frage, seit wann in der Metalszene das Motto „Sex Sells“ Einzug gehalten hat. Ist es denn zwingend notwendig, dass eine Frontfrau in unserer Szene mittlerweile mit so knappen Bühnenoutfits rumrennen muss, dass der unwissende Betrachter der Konzertbilder von Elize eventuell darauf schließen könnte, keine Metalsängerin, sondern eine Backgroundtänzerin von Beyonce vor sich zu haben? Fazit der Show: Elize, zieh dir was an, deine Stimme wird darunter nicht leiden!

Weniger poppig, aber nicht weniger populär präsentiert sich der Co-Headliner der Tour: niemand geringeres als die finnischen Metal-Cellisten von APOCALYPTICA. Muss man über diese Herren eigentlich noch viel erzählen? Seit die Finnen 1996 im Rahmen ihrer Abschlussprüfung an der Sibelius-Akademie ihre Liebe zur klassischen Musik mit ihrer Leidenschaft für Metallica verbanden und das Album „Play Metallica by four Cellos“ veröffentlichten, ist das Cello Rock Quartett von den internationalen Bühnen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Ihre Interpretationen bekannterer Metalsongs sowie klassischer Stücke fasziniert Jung und Alt ebenso wie den Besucher klassischer Konzerte und den kettentragenden Die-Hard-Metaler. Und so präsentieren APOKALYPTICA anfangs erst ihr klassisches Repertoire, bevor sie mit dem Rammstein-Cover zu “Seemann” gesangliche Unterstützung von Elize Ryd erhalten – diesmal im schickem Abendkleid worunter ihre Stimme ganz und garnicht leidet. Den krönenden Abschluss macht die Metallica-Coverversion von “Nothing else Matters”, zu dem gefühlt die komplette König-Pilsener-Arena aus einer Kehle und einer Seele mitsingt – ein Gänsehautmoment der ganz besonderen Sorte!

Die Fans in der ersten Reihe sollten mittlerweile aufgetaut sein. Zumindest lässt die ein oder andere kleine Schmelzwasserpfütze im Fotograben darauf schließen. Falls dem nicht so sein sollte: jetzt ist keine Zeit mehr zu frieren, denn SABATON betreten nicht die Bühne – nein, sie entern die Bühne! Nach einem kurzen Intro legen sie mit “Ghost Devision” richtig los, und auch der Pyrotechniker gibt aus allen Rohren Feuer frei! Und wie schon im Vorfeld vermutet, dezent ist eindeutig das falsche Wort für die Bühnenkulisse der Schweden. Eher wie der Schauplatz eines Schützengrabens. Aber hätte irgendjemand bei SABATON die Kulisse einer malerischen Fantasy-Landschaft mit Einhörnern erwartet? Wie gut, dass ich nicht für die Kulissen der Band zuständig bin, ich hätte genug Ideen für einen ausgereiften Tourstreich zum Tourfinale! Traditionell in bestem Mitstampf-Rythmus präsentieren sich die Schweden in Topform, und die Show begeistert nicht nur akustisch sondern auch optisch. Und wie gut, dass die Herren von APOCALYPTICA nicht direkt unter die Dusche oder zum Catering verschwunden sind, denn zur gemeinsamen Single “Angels Calling” stehen die vier Finnen den Schweden im Schlachtfeld um die Krone des Power Metals treu zur Seite. Aber dies sollte nicht die einzige gemeinsame Performance dieser Show bleiben. Insgesamt fünf Songs präsentiert die skandinavischen Allianz gemeinsam, unter anderm auch “Fields of Verdun”. Aber was wäre ein SABATON-Gig ohne ihren großen Hit “Primo Victoria”? Richtig, der Gig wäre nicht vollendet, und als zur Zugabe die ersten Töne erklingen, ist die Stimmung nicht mehr zu bremsen. Mit “Swedish Pagans” und “To hell and back” beschließen SABATON ihren fulminanten Einstand in der König-Pilsener-Arena.

There was a time when SABATON had to gain attention as supporting infantry for other bands but that was long ago. In the present the swedish guys fill big venues and even stadiums easily in every country. So that’s what happened in Oberhausen, too. We could guess what we have to expect, when we had a look at the parking area and recognized several tour buses and trucks. But that was no surprise at all, as SABATON used to offer a large show on stage already at the summer festivals of last year. A few fans were waiting in front of the venue for quite a long time before, and we have something of the sort of winter actually so there were longing for some pyro probably. They deserved to be heaten up of course. But that was not the only way to get the fans warmed, because it’s usual at such a big tour to invite support acts. AMARANTHE was first. This “modern metal” band is well-known for having three singers and offering extreme metal plus synth elements as well. The clear voices of vocalists Elize Ryd and Nils Molin mash up in harmony with the harsh growling of Henrik Englund. However, the band from Denmark and Sweden is often critisized for being nearly a pop group, but in Oberhausen they went down well. But one question remains: How long since “sex sells” became the slogan in heavy metal scene? Is it really necessary, that a female front singer is jumping around in such a tight dress, that unaware beholders may think she’s a background dancer of Beyonce and not a metal vocalist while considering concert pics? Coclusion: Elize, please dress up, that won’t affect your beautiful voice.

Less poppy but not less popular is the tour’s co-headliner: The finnish metal cellists APOCALYPTICA. There is no need to introduce them, is it? Since the finns published their album “Play Metallica by four cellos” in 1996 and finnishing their exit exam at Sibelius-academy to declare their eternal love for classic music and Metallica, we can hardly imagine a world without the quartet playing on international stages. Their interpretation of famous metal songs and classic songs captivate young and old people and even visitors of classic music concerts together with chain wearing die-hard metal fans. At this evening APOCALYPTICA were presenting their classic repertoire first and then switched to the RAMMSTEIN cover “Seemann” where they got support vocals by Elize Ryd dressed in a dress, what did not impair her voice at all. The last song was “Nothing else matters” (METALLICA cover) and nearly the whole arena kept singing along to this by voice and soul which caused goosebumps deluxe, of course.

Meanwhile the fans standing front row should had been defrosted. A few puddles of snowmelt in the photo ditch gave us that clue. There wasn’t any more time to freeze anyway, because SABATON were’nt just enterning the stage, they were conquering it! After a short intro they get started with “Ghost Division” and the pyro technicans were starting to shoot, too. Subdued is the wrong word to describe the swede’s stage set, it was rather the feeling of being in the trenches. But would anybody expect a set with a fasntasy landscape and unicorns instead? It’s a good thing that it isn’t my job to create the setting on stage, there would be some ideas for the final show of this tour…
Coming along with traditional stamping rhythms the swedes proved to be in peak form not only with an acoustic show but with visual highlights as well. Good to know the guys of APOCALYPTICA didn’t went for a shower or food directly after their set, because now they joined SABATON on stage to perform their mutual song “Angels Calling” and fought side by side to achieve the throne of power metal. But that was not the only joint performance of this show! Five songs in total were presented by the scandinavian alliance, “Fields of Verdun” amongst others.
But no SABATON gig will happen without their biggest hit “Primo Victoria”! The concert would be incomplete and when the first tunes from that song resounded the crowd was no holding back. After that the first gig of SABATON in König-Pilsener-Arena ended with “Swedish pagans” and “To hell and back”.
