XANDRIA & DELAIN in Essen

(english version below)

“We are really happy to play our new songs for you!”, begrüßte Ambre das Publikum in Essen. “The next song brought us back after many years of absence”. “Oh. Pretty great it seems”.

The dream is still alive! “We love you!”, legte die Fronterin sich schon früh fest. “We are super grateful to play here. This is our fifth show in germany and I’ve been practising…”, kündigte sie einen kleinen Ausflug ins Deutsche an. “She nailed it!”, wie man so schön sagt. “Thank you all for coming to this show”, sagte er ins Mikro. “This is the last show, so we really, really, really need to have a party with you!” wurden die Erwartungen gleich hochgeschraubt, aber das war dem Essener Publikum nur recht, niemand wollte hier chillen (höchstens in Verbindung mit “The Apocalypse”). A couple of month ago we released our new album “Dark Waters”. And the next song ist about finding your passion and direction in life”.

“Are you guys having fun?” wollte Diana wissen. “Do you feel tired? With this next song I will make you feel VERY tired. We’ll have a guest on stage…”. Der nächste Song gehört auf jeden Fall auch dazu: “Your Body Is A Battleground” von “The Human Contradiction”. Der Italiener steht keine Sekunde still. You make this Wednesday night special for us . And you look so fit in a country of eating? How’s that even possible? I didn’t expect that. You have a lot of delicious food in your region. I thought we’ll get ten people in here and then… We Are The Others” begeben wollten. Are there people which are visiting their first DELAIN concert tonight?”. “Not convincing!”, urteilte sie zunächst.

In the symphonic metal genre, one is accustomed to adversity. All too often, bands irreparably break apart, vocalists change, and there are regular dramas and divisions among the fan base. Often enough, great bands cease to exist as a result. But they still exist: the positive stories and happy endings. There are rebirths and hope. In my opinion, this is achieved when the heart of a band beats powerfully and there is a person at the center who embodies both overflowing creativity and an unwavering will to share it. That is passion, that is dedication to the cause. And that is why in 2023 we can still report on a tour by DELAIN and XANDRIA. Both bands experienced some significant internal turmoil some time ago. While XANDRIA, especially with the departure of Dianne van Giersbergen on vocals, cannot be described as a noiseless affair, the rest of the group simply closed a chapter and pursued other projects (Marco, “the heart,” continued to beat for XANDRIA). There were certainly more upheavals in DELAIN, but Martijn Westerholt also held the banner high and upheld the morale, ensuring that this important pillar of symphonic metal was not permanently taken away from us. I cherish the previous lineups of DELAIN and XANDRIA, as we had wonderful concerts together and they are all gifted musicians. Whether it’s Steven Wussow with ORDEN OGAN, Charlotte Wessels and Dianne’s fantastic solo careers, or Timo Somers with Arjen Lucassen’s SUPERSONIC REVOLUTION, to name just a few examples, it’s worth following the projects of the individual former members. But the story of XANDRIA and DELAIN continues to be written, and the proof of that was evident live at Turock in Essen.

To emphasize their rebirth, XANDRIA presented exclusively songs from their current album, “The Wonders Still Awaiting,” with one exception. They kicked off their set with all three singles in succession: “You Will Never Be Our God,” “Reborn,” and “Ghosts.” Even though it was the final evening, with several weeks of touring behind them, the joy of playing on the Essen stage remained undiminished. This was necessary because a song like the opener cannot be performed half-heartedly; it contains too much “electricity.” Singer Ambre Vourvahis impressed not only with her clean vocals but also with her growling abilities. She excelled in both styles, leading me to believe early on that she would become a sought-after guest vocalist in the scene. And yesterday, proof was already provided: Ambre sings on “The Hourglass,” the latest song by MORTEMIA. Feel free to check it out on YouTube. “We are really happy to play our new songs for you!” Ambre greeted the audience in Essen. “The next song brought us back after many years of absence.” She was, of course, referring to the energetic “Reborn,” which appeared in the sky like a surprising star back then, and we fans followed that star like the Magi and found ourselves in a stable… No, I think we shouldn’t stretch the metaphor too far, as then we would have to determine who represents the ox and who represents the donkey, and that could lead to a brawl. Let’s focus our attention on the XANDRIA performance and the next song, “Ghosts.” Unfortunately, the car from the video was not brought onto the stage, but Ambre and the guys don’t need any props; they speak for themselves, providing both the framework and the image, leaving nothing to be desired. Marco and Robert repeatedly climbed the platforms at the edge of the stage, unleashing their guitar sounds into the hungry crowd, while Tim Schwarz on bass gave it his all. However, drummer Dimitrios had fallen ill at the last minute, and as a result, substitute drummer Niko learned the entire set in a remarkable 24 hours. It’s always incredible how musicians can step in for another band spontaneously and deliver such a fantastic result without much preparation time. Niko, in any case, excelled on the drums for XANDRIA. A big thank you to him for making this performance possible. “Essen, how are you doing?” the singer asked at one point and was evidently impressed by the enthusiastic response. “Oh, pretty great, it seems.” The atmosphere was consistently positive throughout the evening, and since the fan bases of DELAIN and XANDRIA overlap in many ways, there were plenty of XANDRIA shirts and a lot of sing-along participation. This also applied to the only non-“Wonders” song in the set: “Nightfall” from Sacrificium proved that Ambre can absolutely handle the older songs as well. It was followed by a song that, based on the lyrics, one might assume is the title track, but it’s actually called “Two Worlds,” and only after that did they truly perform “The Wonders Still Awaiting.” While other bands often include a quieter piece towards the end, XANDRIA unleashed all their power once again with “My Curse Is My Redemption,” bringing their set to a climactic close. Overall, it can be stated that this resurrection of a band is the most successful and impressive in recent history. We want more XANDRIA! But first, in the fall, it’s time for the Americans, as XANDRIA will accompany KAMELOT and BATTLE BEAST to the States. Well-deserved!

The evening had really only just begun, but after XANDRIA’s set, one already needed fluids and a moment of calm to gather strength again. Of course, you don’t ration these things rationally and think, “No, I won’t headbang just yet; the long headliner is still to come.” When you feel it, you go all out – that’s the metal law. The energy comes naturally, through the music. As in Tilburg and the other shows, the headliner began their set with my personal favorite song from the new album, “The Cold.” Before the concert, I had the opportunity to conduct an interview with founder and mastermind Martijn Westerholt, which you will soon be able to read in its usual place. However, discussing DELAIN’s music and experiencing it live are, of course, two different things. If there were a survey in the symphonic metal scene about which band serves as the inspiration for the most tattoos, DELAIN would certainly rank among the top contenders. The uniquely intricate artwork of the Dutch band inspires many great tattoos, and the poetic lyrics are also suitable for various artistic interpretations. Of course, there was much discussion after the band’s restructuring. The usual questions were asked: “Is this still my band after all the members, except Martijn, have changed?” I have a very clear stance on this: a band does not belong to me, and as a fan, I have no right to a specific type of music or a particular lineup. Music is not a service! I cannot demand that there be more orchestral arrangements or that “my bassist” stays in the band forever. Art, music, the people behind it, everything is constantly evolving. Of course, I am free to turn away from a band and say, “They no longer make my kind of music,” but that should not be accompanied by resentment towards anyone. With Sander and Ronald returning to the band lineup, Diana Leah doing a wonderful job (even with the old songs!), and Martijn and Guus still creating and shaping DELAIN’s music, there is even less reason for outrage than there already was. When I attended the try-out show in Zwolle and experienced the “old/new” DELAIN on stage, it was clear to me: the dream is still alive! I still have the same feelings when I listen to DELAIN’s music. Nearly a year has passed since Zwolle, and by now, especially after the release of “Dark Waters,” it should be clear to most: DELAIN is alive and still making wonderful music. After the opener, they immediately continued with “Suckerpunch,” which Diana delivers just as coolly as Charlotte did back then. “We love you!” the frontwoman declared early on. “We are super grateful to play here. This is our fifth show in Germany, and I’ve been practicing…” she announced a little excursion into German. “Ihr seid einzigartig, Essen! Wir kommen wieder! Wir lieben euch!”, she managed to say, and of course, it was very well received by the audience. After that, Diana proved that she can also sing quite challenging songs from DELAIN’s history because “Burning Bridges” was on the program, and it’s not an easy one. “She nailed it!” as they say. While the singer was burning bridges, the audience hung onto her every word, building bridges to her and the band in return. Due to the lack of a photo pit, it was no problem at Turock to establish contact with the audience. Now, guitarist Ronald Landa took the floor. He had moved everyone to tears with his solo rendition of “Cordell” by THE CRANBERRIES in Tilburg, but unfortunately, Essen didn’t get to experience that. “Thank you all for coming to this show,” he said into the microphone. “This is the last show, so we really, really, really need to have a party with you!” Expectations were raised high, but the Essen audience was more than happy with that; no one wanted to chill here (except maybe in connection with “The Apocalypse”). Next, they treated the ears to a masterpiece from the past, the wonderful “Invidia.” The album “April Rain” is already fourteen years old, but the lyrics are still very much present for most fans. However, this was the “Dark Waters” tour, and more new songs were set to be played, as Leah reminded everyone afterward: “A couple of months ago, we released our new album ‘Dark Waters.’ And the next song is about finding your passion and direction in life.” With that introduction, “Underland” unfolded its very special, mystical atmosphere.

In general, there was a killer atmosphere, so to speak. This kind of music is so energetic that you can’t help but get into it and go along with it. The passionate participation was rewarded with “Hurricane,” and for those who already felt properly spun around by that, it didn’t get any easier. “Are you guys having fun?” Diana asked. “Do you feel tired? With this next song, I will make you feel VERY tired. We’ll have a guest on stage…” Most people knew, of course, who would come now. Since the usual duet partner, MARCO HIETALA, wasn’t present for the older songs either, we were all excited about the talented Paolo Ribaldini. He had also been heard on the recordings of the new studio album, so he was now able to perform songs like “Beneath” (where he has a significant part) and “Queen Of Shadow.” I think it’s wonderful that DELAIN has a regularly appearing male guest vocalist again; it adds another component to the already delicate concept. And let’s be honest: for some of the older songs, the interplay of two voices is needed anyway. The next song definitely belongs in that category: “Your Body Is A Battleground” from “The Human Contradiction.” Diana and Paolo interpreted this powerful duet magnificently and effectively conveyed its deeper message. But Paolo’s stage presence is truly impressive. The Italian doesn’t stand still for a second. When he doesn’t have a singing part, he air-guitars and interacts brilliantly with the other band members. This further amps up the atmosphere and drives the band members to peak performance. Paolo is a great addition, and the chemistry with the rest of the band is absolutely spot on. That’s by no means a given! We’ve seen plenty of lackluster and uninspired guest performances before! Not necessarily with DELAIN, but in the scene! Ideally, both sides have fun with such a break in the set. And let’s be honest: it’s one of the most delightful surprises when unexpectedly, out of nowhere, people like ANNEKE VAN GIERSBERGEN, LIV KRISTINE, or TONY KAKKO spring out of the hat and give a song a whole new touch. That’s why it’s so refreshing to see how the new/old DELAIN collaborates wonderfully naturally and with fun and passion on stage. Paolo is definitely part of that. He stuck around a bit longer because right after, one of DELAIN’s “signature songs” came on, namely “The Gathering.” Who is responsible for this setlist, by the way? DELAIN has two “jumping songs”: the aforementioned ancient “The Gathering” and the newer track “Let Go!” Playing them back to back was a clear challenge to the knee muscles! Somehow, they managed the feat, and Ronald immediately expressed his respect for the athletic performance: “You make this Wednesday night special for us. And you look so fit in a country of eating? How’s that even possible? I didn’t expect that. You have a lot of delicious food in your region. I thought we’ll get ten people in here and then… Full House,” he joked. Just you wait, Ronald! When one day you stop flailing around and going crazy on stage and hang up your stage guitar, you’ll also expand like a yeasted bread roll 😉 Then we’ll talk about the “Full House” again. To divert attention from the touchy subject of body size, DELAIN quickly played the next power song, which also adorned the T-shirts of those present: “Moth To A Flame.” This highly catchy song is probably the worst earworm from “Dark Waters” and, of course, immediately got hopelessly stuck. It was foreseeable that the crowd still wanted “Not Enough” when the band left the stage after the song of the same name. But not for long, because the loud cheers, the constant applause, and the chants of the “moths” quickly brought the “light” back on stage. The unmistakable “metallic” intro of “Mother Machine” and Ronald’s dominant guitar playing made it clear that we now wanted to delve into the annals of “We Are The Others.” And Paolo returned once again to perform “Sing To Me” with Diana. After that, time was almost up, but the singer had one more question: “Are there people who are attending their first DELAIN concert tonight?” Judging by the response, there might have been three people at most, but she welcomed them again especially. I have seen many DELAIN gigs, and this one in Essen I would have easily recommended to any “first-timer” to get a good first impression. Afterwards, Diana thanked the entire crew, as is customary at the end of a tour, and then demanded a clear show of approval from the audience for the last song. “Not convincing!” she initially judged. But luckily, on the second go, she allowed that the second signature song, “We Are The Others,” could be added as well. That was truly the magnificent finale of a fantastic concert. DELAIN and XANDRIA are better than ever and fulfill all the expectations one can have for a live show. Thank you for this wonderful symphonic metal night at Turock Essen!
