DARK MALTA-Festival – Eine Insel trägt schwarz – Teil 3

Ich schlug die Augen auf. Kein Sonnenschein. Wolkenverhangener Himmel. “Warst du feiern in Gianpula?”. Schuldbewusstes Schnabelsenken.

Moment!

Slippery when wet, nech?

“Schlafen Sie?? Das ist ja unerhört”. Hä? Meine Chefin?

(english version)

I opened my eyes. No sunshine. Cloudy sky. There was a tapping at the window. The quiet clinking had woken me up. It was Giulia, the seagull, and the clock showed 11. “You’re late!” I said accusingly after getting up and opening the window. Giulia looked sheepish. She tilted her head and croaked softly. “Were you partying in Gianpula?” Guilt-ridden beak lowering. I am a bad influence. She followed my advice and visited the caged birds at Dark Malta. I stroked my Maltese friend’s head. “You’d better rest today. If you oversleep again tomorrow and come late, I’ll miss my flight!

Although it was late, I took a walk along the shore. Malta is beautiful even when the sun doesn’t shine. I walked all the way to Buġibba Perched Beach and looked out at the sea. Melancholy overcame me. I had only been here for three days, but this place had already captivated me. Malta is truly worth a visit. And the public transportation is cheap, even free for locals. I purchased a flat-rate ticket and thoughtfully rode to Rabat. Today was supposed to be the grand finale. As always at a festival, one clings to the last moments.

On site, I met up with my editorial colleagues and we decided to skip the pool party today. Instead, we sat outside the Main Room and watched the other guests. Many of them were dressed to impress. There’s no oversized fashion show like at Wave Gotik Treffen, but here at Dark Malta, people still showed off their style. Corsets, hats, steampunk and cyber outfits took turns. We went in front of the stage early and secured good spots. MAL DI LUNA started their set at half past one. The Italian trio was led by singer Chris Glenn, who initially performed with a hood, but later took off his jacket and hood. MAL DI LUNA is a relatively new project, with their first single “Moonlight” released last year. Together with his guitarist and drummer, Glenn delivered a solid performance and definitely did the job of getting the audience into gear.

The dynamic continued with ANCIENT REMAINS. The keyboard player stood out by wearing the mask of the Witch-King of Angmar from “The Lord of the Rings”. The band clearly relies on their performance. The other members wore black cloaks. There was no singing in this “band”; it was more like a theatrical play with atmospheric sound. An interesting variation in the line-up.

Just like their predecessors, XITAN also had a lot to offer visually, but this time with vocals. First, a coffin was carried through the entire audience by nuns. The band knows how to put on an unforgettable show. The sound was also top-notch, with great electronic beats, and the crowd thanked them with plenty of dancing. With female vocals, they even covered “Children of the Dark” by MONO INC. – not bad! And the performance was just great. Candle holders, makeup, and at the end, even a censer was swung. “Xitan” is Maltese for “devil” – very fitting, as the whole ceremony had a satanic feel to it. Apparently, despite its small size, the island produces some great bands.

Other islands were also represented at the festival. TOXIC ARMY came from Mallorca and brought a strong dose of Bo Metal. Singer Laura Galiano moved a lot on stage and sought contact with the audience. The Spaniards managed to bring as much power to the stage as ARCH ENEMY. This did not go unnoticed by the Maltese dance crowd, as the location quickly filled up, with people drawn to the hard industrial metal of the quartet. In between, the band even managed to get people jumping and when they played their cover of “Temple of Love” by SISTERS OF MERCY, there was no holding back. At this point, the diversity of the line-up should be praised! DJ Hades carefully selected the participants for the festival. Although there was a “gothic” theme holding everything together, there was room under the Dark Malta sky for all sorts of sub-styles within the black scene. TOXIC ARMY had the crowd under their control with their metal.

THE DARK – yes, not only DARK played at Dark Malta, but also THE DARK – confusing. The Sunday dark band insists on the article and comes from California. Their new EP “Hex Kult” had just been released, which was fitting for the occasion, and of course, songs from the new record were played. Visually, THE DARK are somewhat reminiscent of DEATHSTARS, and the guys definitely knew how to present themselves. The atmosphere was already near its peak at this point, even before the headliner was in sight. This speaks highly of the previous bands being well received. The guitarists celebrated each other with some mutual knee bends, and a keytar and a megaphone were also used. A great show that the Americans put on here. Wait! Let’s take a closer look at the keytarist. She looked very familiar to us! A short search later confirms that it is Caitlin Stokes from CORLYX. It’s funny to discover the many connections between bands. It’s like playing memory.
Anyway, THE DARK can be awarded the “Malta Approved” seal of approval.

The name MOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is quite interesting. Of course, one automatically thinks of the “Hotel Transylvania” children’s movies. Well, whether this cross-reference was intentional? The guitars were shredded heavily here, including a nice one with a green-black pattern. The singer looked visually like a fusion of René Anlauff and Peter Spilles, but musically the guys are located in horror punk with a good dose of 80s rock n’ roll. Once again, the smoke-grey diamond of the Dark Malta Festival revealed another facet to us. Finally, there was something for the string lovers again. Contrary to the name, the band comes from nearby Italy, and the audience was headbanging heavily.

ALIEN VAMPIRES are probably newly arrived on Earth, as their movements were occasionally clumsy. The singer even ran into his microphone at one point. Alcohol also seems to play a certain role for the Brits. First, a bottle of champagne was uncorked and partially emptied into the audience, then a bottle of Jack Daniels was added. ALIEN VAMPIRES took care to ensure that their fans were well supplied and in good spirits. In return, the crowd clapped, cheered, and jumped energetically. Two dancers supported the band on stage and also thrilled the audience.

I don’t know if the Maltese had checked the weather forecast and put much thought into their clothing on that day. If they did, all those preparations were now doomed. Low-pressure system AGONOIZE approached from the north and opened its floodgates. I guess most of those present knew what to expect, but there were also some shocked individuals who scrambled out of harm’s way as Chris L. and his men called for a blood-red dance. Not only ALIEN VAMPIRES were momentarily thrown off balance, Chris also staggered briefly when the first blood splattered onto the stage. Slippery when wet, huh? Moderator ERIC13 pretended to play the keyboard. However, those who looked closely noticed that the instrument was not even connected. After the intro, they continued with “Schmerzpervers 2.0” and “Blutgruppe Jesus (-)”. Wasn’t Malta a very Catholic country? No matter. AGONOIZE never compromises. The German steamroller rolls over everything: expectations, desires, dreams, ideas, and prejudices. Wherever Chris L. sets foot, no grass grows and nothing else either. Should Germany deliver heavy weapons? AGONOIZE has already decided and packed the CO2 cannon. The rest is moisture. Red moisture. ERIC even let Chris hand him the knife. The crowd danced in the warm rain and celebrated hits like “Femme Fatale,” “Glaubenskrieger,” and of course “Bis das Blut gefriert.” Actually, the whole thing already had headliner qualities, but Rene still had an ace up his sleeve…

And this ace – the fork ace, color pitch-black, of course goes by the name PROJECT PITCHFORK. I don’t even know how many times I’ve written about this band. But with this group, everything is just right. They are absolutely established, successful for decades, have shaped the scene sustainably, are down-to-earth, absolutely likable, and always deliver. There are no bad Pitchfork concerts, no mediocrity or “just nice”, there is only complete escalation, dance alarm, and exertion. During “Acid Ocean” and “Rain”, there is a moment of reflection, and during “Beholder”, jumping is required, as per the law of the silver fork! Meanwhile, one gets the impression that the performances are choreographed by the audience. Of course, mosh pits also form, because the bass traditionally can’t be below the “brutal” level. I’ve seen people pass out at PITCHFORK concerts. And of course, several drummers were on stage again, a trademark of the veterans. They started with “Pitch-Black”, but the Error-Xitan had struck again and the song had to be started again. But then, there were no more hiccups for the headliner, except for the hearts and leg muscles of the listeners, which were on fire. “Timekiller” well…indeed unfortunately it was the last performance and time had flown by too quickly. The birds were surely looking forward to having their habitat to themselves again. But according to the organizer, techno parties usually take place in the holy halls.

After spending some time at the after-show party and delaying the painful end of the festival as much as possible, we made our way back to our accommodation. When you’re about to leave, everything seems more intense. The starlight, the night air, the lights of St. Paul’s Bay, the sea breeze… We toasted to the Dark Malta festival, to Rene “DJ Hades” Farrugia, to the excellent bands, and to Mediterranean life. Then we all went to bed for one last time. In my mind, I urged my biological alarm clock Giulia to be on time. Planes don’t wait.

Screaming woke me up, but confusingly, it wasn’t the screech of a seagull. “Are you sleeping? That’s unheard of.” Huh? My boss? “Malta?” I stammered. “We talked about that! You don’t need another vacation already. I want the Excel evaluation by 2 p.m. Get to work!” Furious, she stormed out of the room and I realized I was still in Germany. Had it all been a dream? It had felt so real. The taste of the beer, the cries of the seagulls, the sounds of the island at night. Hadn’t I just been jumping up and down to “Beholder”? Apparently not… My editorial colleagues had told me so much about Dark Malta that I had conjured it up in my mind. But I still felt somehow satisfied… As if I had been there.

I visited the Dark Malta website. The date for next year’s festival wasn’t listed yet: “This time, I’ll book well in advance and take time off,” I thought to myself. I have to be there next time!
