DARK MALTA-Festival – Eine Insel trägt schwarz Teil 1

(English version below)

Count me in! “Urlaub? Schon wieder? Warst du nicht gerade erst in Japan?” .

Ah. Malta. Ich hatte es also doch noch geschafft. Ausgezeichnet. Ich sah auf mein Handy. Freitagnachmittag.

“Love Is Lost”.

Headliner-Time in Gianpula! Sänger Whiplasher fühlte sich sichtlich wohl vor Ort: “This is the best place to start a new chapter with a new album: In Malta”, rief er.

Please note: We’ve goit two photo galleries for each band. Please look for the other galleries in the german text version above.

Malta, the smallest country in the European Union, has not been known for having a particularly large black scene so far. In the past, there was a secret doom festival and of course, the Dark Malta festival had already taken place a few times, but when it comes to festivals in general, Maltese scene followers usually missed out. But where there’s a will, there’s a way, and thanks to the dedicated organizers, they managed to leave a lasting black mark on the island. Fans often call for their bands to play in XY, but the answer is always: sure, gladly, but we need an invitation from a local promoter and a location. THAT is the sticking point. It takes someone on the ground to take care of everything. In Malta, that person goes by the name of Rene Farrugia also known as DJ Hades. His company, Hades Events, organized the party and brought the big names to a small island in the Mediterranean. Of course, I was also excited when the festival was announced. Discovering a new country and celebrating with my bands in a new setting? Count me in! The preparations for our Malta expedition team at Sharpshooter-Pics were going well. And then the setback for me. “Vacation? Again? Weren’t you just in Japan?” My boss had no understanding for my spirit of discovery. With dark thoughts, I went back to my office and thought about how to get out of the situation and get into Malta. An afternoon slump came over me, and I got tired…

Seagull cries. As I opened my eyes, the sun blinded me. It smelled of warm stones and sea. I blinked. And it got dark again, as paper hit my face. Startled, I ripped it off. A flyer. “Dark Malta Festival” – purple with a skull logo. Confused, I looked around. A cliff and the sea behind it. Ah. Malta. So I had made it after all. Excellent. I looked at my phone. Friday afternoon. It was about to start soon. I boarded the bus at Bugibba Bay that took me inland and walked to the location in Zeebugg. From afar, I could already see the crowd of black-clad people and knew: I’m in the right place.
The first band was DAMAGED & CO. and started playing while the sun was still high in the sky. Under the arch of the “Gianpula Main Room” stage, things got off to a hard start, the name was essentially programmatic. It was clear that a metal cauldron was being mixed right from the start. The singer of the local heroes from Malta wore the local festival merchandise and thus showed his connection to the event.

LOST REALITY was simply fun and created a great atmosphere in front of the stage, where more and more visitors slowly gathered. For some songs, a female singer joined the Italian band alongside the male vocals of Garmo. They played some songs from the 2014 album “Fleeting Awareness” and some singles. The two voices complemented each other very well. The audience was a mix of people. Eric13, who acted as a moderator throughout the event, was visibly in his element. When he wasn’t making announcements, he mingled with the crowd, asking attendees where they came from and telling some anecdotes from his life, including stories about his Polish grandma and the best pierogi she makes.

But there wasn’t much time for chatting, as the industrial faction in the form of NORMORIA took the stage. The band played some new songs from their upcoming EP, and judging by the dance movements of the audience, this type of music was well received. Matt Hart joined the dynamic Stockholm-based troupe as a special guest for “Paralyzed.” The songs sung with distorted vocals whipped up the Gothic vibes quite nicely, and the beautifully decorated guitar illuminated at the edge of the stage was particularly notable. The upcoming EP is definitely worth checking out when it’s released. For those who are interested, you can already listen to their 2020 album “Voyage”.

CHONTARAZ is a very resonant name and was announced as the “band from hell”. The singer appeared on stage with a black and white painted face and immediately set a high tempo, accompanied by his sunglass-wearing string players. There was a lot of posing on stage, and you could tell that the guys simply love to perform and are fully in their element. Additionally, there was a lot of headbanging going on. Since the location is more or less designed as an open tent, nature has free access – even without a ticket. Between the songs, you can notice birds, who weren’t deterred by CHONTARAZ’s hard performance, merrily chirping away and apparently even building their nests in the speakers. Unbelievable! We’ve never seen anything like this before.

What was the event called again? Oh yes, DARK MALTA. We had experienced Malta all day long and had already seen many of the foreign attendees in the streets of Rabat/Mdina. As far as the “Dark” goes, there was still room for improvement. To change that, the band DARK took the stage. Here too, the singer wore sunglasses, even though the sun was already clearly on its way down at this point. It was still bright, so DARK had to fix that. There was also something for the eyes here, with two dancers providing a nice addition to the sound. At first, only the aforementioned three were on stage, but later there was also female vocal accompaniment.

The stage program was now nearing its end. On Friday, the co-headliner slot was filled by a true institution of the black scene: L’ÂME IMMORTELLE from Austria. But even legends are sometimes plagued by the pitfalls of technology: during the first song (“Dem Abgrund entgegen”), Thomas Rainer’s microphone failed, resulting in a short interruption before continuing with “Requiem”. The performance then proceeded smoothly and as substantial as ever. For many Maltese guests, it may have been the first opportunity to hear songs from the latest album “Im tiefen Fall” live. “Angst” and “Asche” were such “Malta premieres”. The congenial duo of Rainer and Sonja Kraushofer still harmonizes as well today as it did twenty years ago. There were also songs played from that early period such as “Love Is lost”. The “immortal soul” proves once again to be timeless and beautiful, undeterred by the vicissitudes of the years. Sonja also thrilled the audience with costume changes. We got to see the grey, torn dress as well as a red rose dress. Thomas Rainer appeared as smartly dressed as always. L’ÂME IMMORTELLE brought the sparkle to Malta. It was also unmistakably clarified that there is really BITTERNESS EVERYWHERE – even remote places like Malta were not spared from it.

It’s time for the headliner in Gianpula! The fully packed venue was eagerly waiting for the Swedish headliners of the day, DEATHSTARS. A band that hasn’t been heard much in recent years. Their last album, “The Perfect Cult”, was released a whopping nine years ago. Therefore, the anticipation for their performance in Malta was particularly high. The new album already has a release date: “Everything Destroys You” is scheduled for release on May 5th, and two singles have already been released. Singer Whiplasher felt visibly comfortable on stage, shouting, “This is the best place to start a new chapter with a new album: In Malta.”. Of course, they also played new songs, along with classics such as “Synthetic Generation”, “Tongues”, and “Blitzkrieg”.
Even the headliner was not spared technical problems, but the audience had one main feeling: finally seeing DEATHSTARS live again, and they moved enthusiastically to both the familiar and new songs. The band had apparently missed the live feeling very much, especially Whiplasher, who frequently went to the edge of the stage and interacted directly with the audience. Individual fans were allowed to wear the characteristic cap in between and then dutifully returned it to its rightful owner. Sometimes even on all fours or lying on the boxes, the charismatic frontman of the Swedes performed his heart out. Here, you really got a worthy headliner.
