Kirche einmal anders: Bowiechurch – Scenes of a Rock’n’Roll Life in der Subkultur

(English below)

A different kind of church: Bowiechurch – Scenes of a Rock’n’Roll Life at Subkultur, Hannover

When you think of the Subkultur in Hanover, church is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But since “Boss” Jens and his team are always available for original artists and events, and the addition ‘Bowie’ actually makes every fan of the (dark) music scene sit up and take notice, the second part of the series of events featuring singer, guitarist and lyricist ERIC 13 was also well received , like the first one that took place the night before in the form of a reading (Sharpshooter reported).

While there was an eerily beautiful, varied reading on Wednesday, the next night was more about a musical narrative journey through the life of the protagonist Eric, as the addition “Scenes of a Rock’n’Roll Life” announced. The play premiered on January 8, 2023 – Bowie’s birthday – in Philadelphia, USA and celebrated its European premiere on Thursday. But the Subkultur really seemed a bit church-like when you entered it. Neatly furnished with white chairs, limited to 70 seats, and diffusely lit in red, blue and purple. People, some of whom had traveled a long way, waited with expectant faces for a different kind of event, as did local DJs, who were also spotted in the audience and spent the evening with their families. Well, Bowie the exceptional artist connects generations. As on the previous evening, Eric was supported today by his colleague and friend Erk Aicrag, as well as other guests.. but let’s start at the beginning.

The first notes sounded and were well known to every Bowie fan: “Space Oddity”. A young woman appeared on stage and began the evening with a filigree but emotional dance solo. Unexpected but wonderful. After a fitting welcome applause, Erk Aicrag entered the stage, greeted the audience and gave a short outline of what should await us on this evening. In order not to spoil the fun for future viewers, we will only go into the individual stories roughly because – spoiler alert – the show is definitely worth it and is an urgent recommendation from our side. The protagonist of the evening appeared in the spotlight, welcomed by expectant looks and initial cheering. But he didn’t just walk through the rows onto the stage, he took the time to meet the audience personally and up close, to shake hands and generously handed out charming smiles before introducing himself and leading into an evening “full of joy, tears, laughter and a whole lot of David Bowie”.. His rock ‘n’ roll life started early and the next song “5 years” described where we start in Erics history. He already came across Bowie’s work here and later – already as a guitarist for COMBICHRIST – he had developed a very special relationship with him.. well, at least with his clothes. A concert at Madison Square Garden has had a very special meaning here. Jumping to a later point in his life, aided by a poem from his book narrated by Erk, we moved from many funny moments to the dark side of showbiz and a paranormal/near-death experience. Did he really sell his soul?

Another dance interlude by Giulia, as well as a piano accompaniment by a guest who was introduced to us as “Corvin”, quickly shook off the shadows of the (joint) experience. Eric revealed that this was his first time meeting the two in person. It’s actually unbelievable, since the interaction of everyone was incredibly harmonious and worked, as if rehearsed for a long time. It was nice to feel the trust among the artists. And after he explained to us how “Bowiechurch” came about in the first place, dance, song and piano united once again for the performance of Bowie’s “Starman”. But Eric also brought his own songs to the evening. He dedicated the title “Stars” to a friend who died too young, also in relation to the previous stories about Bowie, life and death. But so that the evening didn’t had to end sadly, Eric and Erk had considered getting the audience involved again and presented their live anthem as “Chuntata Boys”. Successfully, the performance ended with dancing and clapping by nearly everyone. But not the evening itself, because even then Eric took time for jokes, hugs and high fives, as well as a few drinks and chats at the bar. And we are quite sure that David on his cloud also raised his glass, smiling because of this really unique artist and his stories.

Conclusion: announcement was program. Anyone who would like to experience an evening full of emotions, music and stories with David Bowie is urgently recommended the join the “Bowiechurch” at the earliest opportunity.
