(english version below)

Kiitos!

“Speak “friend” and enter!” – The “Rock-Gandalf” MARKO HIETALA and his fellowship guide us through the mines of Oberhausen

If this name appeared on the Wroclaw concert (as spotted on a huge poster) for the first time ever, is unknown, but this nickname is just brilliant and fits very good. MARKO HIETALA, bassist and singer of such bands as NIGHTWISH and TAROT is a modest man and would never claim as much wisdom, leadership and combat strenght as the famous Istar of Tolkien. But his popularity within the metal scene is comparable and have a look at this beard!
However, concerts at debut tours are always special, even if a new formed band consists not of demigod-like beings but of passionate musicians with kinda godlike skills. MARKO HIETALA doesn’t need to be introduced to anybody. He has finally found some time to release a solo album called “Pyre Of The Black Heart” to unleash all these elements in music, which didn’t fit his other bands yet. The english version of his album should be seen on the stages of europe now to spend the small time frame before the next NIGHTWISH release “Human :||: Nature”. How was the experienced musician doing on small club stages instead of the usual arena gigs?

The first surprise took place when we arrived at the venue: It got changed last minute to the near “Kulttempel” according to a cheat. Maybe it were’nt that many tickets sold in pre-sale because of the sunday. However, the change to Kulttempel could probably be even positive referred to the more intimate atmosphere of the club harmonising with the very personal stuff at the album. Our editor had the outstanding chance to meet Marko before the gig for an interview, you’ll be able to read that soon in our homepage. But first the support act OCEANHOARSE could show what they had up their sleeves. By the way, that’s not a typo, it hasn’t anything to do with horses or seahorses, but with throat drought, what is not unrealistic referred to the vocalist’s way of singing . The guys come from finland like Marko’s bandmates, some will know the founder and guitarist Ben Varon from his former band AMORAL. Ben was able to shine at playing the guitar rapidly and creativly. You could easily get aware of him being no rookie. The mostly hard and heavy metal of OCEANHOARSE was absolutely thrilling, they even did a SLIPKNOT cover which caused much cheering in the audience. The hard and fast sound of this quite new band constituted a contrast to Markos more calm and reflective album.

MARKO HIETALA, coming along with his companions Anssi Nykänen (drums), Vili Ollila (Keyboard) and Tuomas Wäinölä (guitar) entered the stage as the dignified rockstar he is and welcomed the audience. Considering “Pyre Of The Black Heart” being the first release of this band it got played in its entirety plus some cover songs. The set started soulfuly with “Star, Sand And Shadow” and continued with the wonderful rock song “Dead God’s Son”. Marko moderated the show between the songs in a sympathic and entertaining way and ascertained the people did mainly come to see a rock show. The diversity of the album would have allowed to focus on other things, too. And of course the soft sounds were highly appreciated also in Oberhausen, especially the ballad “The Voice Of My Father”. At the sixth position in the set the first cover song took place: “Olet lehdetön puu”, originally written by the finnish singer/songwriter Heikki Veikko Harma, better known as HECTOR, was the only song in finnish language this evening. The composer got glorified by Marko as an outstanding lyricist. After that followed three own songs (“I dream”, “I Am The Way” and “Runner Of The Railways”) and than especially the elder people were happy to hear a proper cover of the song “Starman” by David Bowie, which caused a persistent earworm at the way home (As confirmed by our fabulous fotographer girl Ulli). But then the end of the gig seemed to take place in the magnific single “Stones”, dealing with the obstacles we have to face in life while moving forward. But fortunately there was an encore!

You could say there has been an development in the audience’s mood during the show. Marko’s humorous announcements were poorly answered in the first half of the set, so many people needed to warm up first. But applause and other responses increased in the second half and so there was no lack of “encore!”-shouts at the end. The first of these songs was a real stunner of the rock and metal history: BLACK SABBATH’s “War Pigs” was real fun for the musicians and the pleased crowd as well. For the really last song of this evening the roadies brought a cello, so Marko could prove his widespread talents by playing this instrument during the last part of the beautiful song “Truth Shall Set You Free”. So a successfull special evening came to an end and we got the desired rock show but also emotions. Marko uses to play at big stadium concert stages with NIGHTWISH and therefore is often far away from the fans, but in Kulttempel Oberhausen there was no distance, neither physically nor emotionally. It’s good to see a great musician staying down to earth and being near to the fans. That applied to his bandmates, too. Vili produced many different sounds with his keyboard and looked quite stylish in his red silk outfit. Tuomas, the guitarist (Is there a law to ensure every finnish rock band has someone with this name?) was deepened and wrapped up in his music totally. The gifted drummer Anssi (well-known by everybody in finland, according to Marko) pleased us by presenting an extended drum solo at the end of the concert. That way a well attuned team ignited the spark which set our “black hearts” on fire at least. Kiitos!
